This summary is prepared directly from the uploaded document.

1. Population and Population Distribution

English:
Population means the number of people living in a particular place. Population distribution refers to how people are spread over the Earth's surface. The world's population is highly unevenly distributed.

Important facts given in the chapter |

  • 90% of the world's population lives on about 10% of the land area.
  • The 10 most populous countries account for about 60% of world population, and six of these are in Asia.
  • According to the document, Asia has the largest share of world population, followed by Africa and Europe.
  • About 90% of the world's population is in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • About 50% of world population lies between 20°N and 40°N latitude.
  • The chapter highlights the concentration of population in developing countries and particularly in China and India.

2. Population Density

English:
Population density is the ratio between the number of people and the area of land. It is generally expressed as persons per square kilometre.

Formula |

Population Density = Population ÷ Area

The chapter gives the 2011 India example and calculates the density as approximately 382 persons per sq. km.

Key point:
Density tells us how closely people are concentrated in relation to the available land.

3. Factors Affecting Population Distribution and Density

The chapter divides the factors into three broad groups:

  1. Geographical factors
  2. Economic factors
  3. Social and cultural factors

A. Geographical Factors |

(i) Availability of Water | जल की उपलब्धता

English: Water is essential for drinking, domestic activities, agriculture, industries and navigation. Therefore, river valleys are generally densely populated.

Examples |
Indus Valley, Hwang Ho Valley, Tigris-Euphrates Valley and Nile Valley.

(ii) Landforms | भू-आकृतियाँ

English: Flat plains and gentle slopes favour agriculture, transport, roads and industries, so they attract more people. Mountains and hilly areas generally have lower population density.

Example:
Ganga Plains → densely populated
Himalayan mountains → sparsely populated

(iii) Climate | जलवायु

English: Extreme hot or cold climates are less favourable for human habitation. Pleasant and moderate climates attract more people.

Example: Mediterranean regions have historically attracted settlement because of their pleasant climate.

(iv) Soils | मिट्टी

English: Fertile soils support intensive agriculture and therefore attract more population.

B. Economic Factors |

(i) Minerals | खनिज

English: Mineral-rich areas attract mining and industries. These activities create employment and attract skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Example: Katanga–Zambia Copper Belt.

(ii) Urbanisation | शहरीकरण

English: Cities provide better employment, education, medical facilities, transport, communication and civic amenities. These advantages encourage rural-to-urban migration.

English: Industrial regions create employment not only for factory workers but also for transport operators, shopkeepers, bank employees, doctors, teachers and other service providers.

Example: Kobe–Osaka region of Japan.

C. Social and Cultural Factors

English: Religious and cultural importance can attract population. In contrast, social and political unrest can cause people to leave an area. Governments may also encourage people to move towards sparsely populated areas.

4. Population Growth / Population Change

English: Population growth or population change means the change in the number of inhabitants of a territory during a specific period. It may be positive or negative and can be expressed in absolute numbers or percentages.

Important Concepts |

1. Growth of Population |

Change in population between two points of time.

2. Growth Rate |

English: Population change expressed as a percentage.

3. Natural Growth |

Natural Growth = Births − Deaths

4. Actual Growth |

Actual Growth = Births − Deaths + In-migration − Out-migration

5. Positive Growth |

Population increases when births exceed deaths or when people permanently migrate into a region.

6. Negative Growth |

Population decreases when deaths exceed births or people migrate out of the region.

5. Components of Population Change

There are three components:

Births |

Deaths |

Migration |

The chapter specifically identifies these three components.

Crude Birth Rate (CBR) |

English: Number of live births per thousand population in a year.

Formula:

CBR = (Live Births ÷ Mid-year Population) × 1000

Crude Death Rate (CDR) |

English: Number of deaths in a particular year per thousand population.

Mortality is influenced by demographic structure, social advancement and economic development.

6. Migration |

English: Migration means movement of people from one place to another.

  • Place of Origin – उद्गम स्थान: Place from where people move.
  • Place of Destination – गंतव्य स्थान: Place to which people move.

Migration reduces population at the origin and increases it at the destination.

Types of Migration |

Migration may be:

  • Permanent –
  • Temporary –
  • Seasonal –

It may occur as:

  • Rural → Rural
  • Rural → Urban
  • Urban → Urban
  • Urban → Rural

Immigration |

Movement into a new place.

Emigration |

Movement out of a place.

7. Push and Pull Factors of Migration

Push Factors |

These make the place of origin less attractive.

Examples:

  • Unemployment –
  • Poor living conditions –
  • Political turmoil –
  • Unpleasant climate –
  • Natural disasters –
  • Epidemics –
  • Socio-economic backwardness –

Pull Factors |

These make the destination more attractive.

Examples:

  • Better job opportunities –
  • Better living conditions –
  • Peace and stability –
  • Security –
  • Pleasant climate –

8. Demographic Transition Theory

English:
Demographic Transition Theory explains and helps predict how the population of a region changes as society develops from a rural, agrarian and illiterate society to an urban, industrial and literate society. Birth and death rates generally change from high levels to low levels.

The chapter presents a three-stage model.

Stage 1 – High Stationary Stage

English:

  • High fertility
  • High mortality
  • Slow population growth
  • Epidemics and variable food supply
  • Agriculture is dominant
  • Large families are considered useful
  • Low life expectancy
  • Low literacy and technology

Example given: Bangladesh.

Stage 2 – Early Expanding Stage

English: Fertility initially remains high but begins to decline. Mortality falls because of improvements in sanitation and health. The gap between high fertility and falling mortality causes rapid population growth.

Examples given: Peru, Sri Lanka and Kenya.

Stage 3 – Low Stationary Stage

English:

  • Fertility declines considerably.
  • Mortality also remains low.
  • Population becomes stable or grows slowly.
  • Society becomes urbanised and literate.
  • Technical knowledge is high.
  • Families deliberately control family size.

Examples: Canada, Japan and USA.

Easy sequence |

Stage 1: High Birth + High Death → Slow Growth

Stage 2: High Birth + Falling Death → Rapid Growth

Stage 3: Low Birth + Low Death → Stable/Slow Growth

9. Population Control Measures

The chapter suggests the following measures:

  1. Family planning –
  2. Spacing between births –
  3. Increasing education –
  4. Emphasis on women's education –
  5. Creating employment –
  6. Easy availability of contraceptives –
  7. Population policy –

Important fact from the document:
India was the first country in the world to launch a national family-planning programme in 1952.

10. Thomas Malthus' Population Theory

English:
Thomas Malthus stated in his 1798 theory that population tends to increase faster than food supply. Excessive population growth could ultimately lead to population decline through famine, disease and war. The chapter emphasises preventive checks as preferable to physical checks.

Main idea |

Population growth must be controlled for sustainable use of resources.
