2. Growth of India’s Foreign Trade
English:
India’s external trade increased from ₹1,214 crore in 1950–51 to ₹44,29,762 crore in 2016–17. The major reasons for this growth include the growth of manufacturing, liberal government policies and diversification of markets.
In 2016–17:
Exports = ₹18,52,340 crore
Imports = ₹25,77,422 crore
Trade balance = Negative
Most of India’s foreign trade is carried through sea and air routes, while a small part is carried through land routes with neighbouring countries.
3. Changing Composition of India’s Exports
English:
The composition of India’s exports has changed over time.
The share of agriculture and allied products has declined.
The share of petroleum, crude products and other commodities has increased.
The share of ore minerals and manufactured goods remained largely stable during the periods mentioned in the document.
Traditional agricultural exports such as coffee and cashew have declined because of international competition.
Exports of floricultural products, fresh fruits, marine products and sugar have increased.
The manufacturing sector accounted for 73.6% of India’s total export value in 2016–17.
Engineering goods have shown significant growth.
Gems and jewellery form an important part of India’s foreign trade.

4. Changing Composition of India’s Imports

During the 1950s and 1960s, India faced food shortages, so food grains, capital goods, machinery and equipment were major imports. After the success of the Green Revolution, food-grain imports declined.
The 1973 energy crisis increased petroleum prices and raised the import burden. Petroleum and fertilisers became important imports.
Major import items include:
Petroleum, oil and lubricants
Non-ferrous metals
Pearls and precious/semi-precious stones
Chemical products
Edible oils
Iron and steel
Fertilisers
Medicinal and pharmaceutical products
Pulp and waste paper

5. Import Substitutes
English:
The document suggests that some imported products can have substitutes developed in India:
Petroleum, oil and lubricants → Electric vehicles
Edible oils → Traditional oils such as mustard oil
Fertilisers → Manure
India also aims to increase its share in international trade through measures such as import liberalisation, reduction in import duties, delicensing and changes in patent policy.

6. Direction of India’s Import Trade

English:
India’s international trade has expanded greatly over time. Its export composition has shifted away from many traditional agricultural products towards petroleum products, manufactured goods, engineering goods and other commodities. Imports have also changed from food grains in the early decades to petroleum, machinery, chemicals, metals and other industrial inputs. India maintains trade relations with different regions of the world, with Asia and ASEAN forming the largest regional component in the data given. Sea ports are the principal gateways of international trade, supported by air transport for high-value and perishable commodities. The development and modernisation of ports and airports has strengthened India’s international trade infrastructure.
