Chapter 8 – International Trade - Summary

Chapter 8 – International Trade

Bilingual Chapter Summary |

1. Trade and International Trade

English

Trade means the voluntary exchange of goods and services between two parties. One party sells and the other purchases. In some places, goods are exchanged directly through the barter system.

Trade takes place at two levels:

  1. National Trade – trade within a country.
  2. International Trade – exchange of goods and services across national boundaries.

Countries trade because they may:

  • Be unable to produce certain commodities themselves, or
  • Obtain them more cheaply from another country.

Thus, international trade connects different countries and markets.

2. Barter System and Money

English

The earliest form of trade was the barter system, in which goods were exchanged directly for other goods or services.

A major difficulty was the double coincidence of wants. For example, a potter needing plumbing services had to find a plumber who wanted pots.

The introduction of money solved many of these difficulties. Before coins and paper currency, various valuable objects such as cattle, salt, rice, shells, copper, silver and gold were used as money.

The chapter also explains that the word salary comes from the Latin salarium, associated with payment by salt.

3. History of International Trade

English

In ancient times, long-distance transportation was risky, so trade was mainly restricted to local markets. Luxury goods such as jewellery and expensive clothing were traded by wealthy people.

The Silk Route was an early example of long-distance trade. It connected Rome and China over a route of about 6,000 km. Chinese silk, Roman wool, precious metals and other high-value goods were traded through regions including India, Persia and Central Asia.

During the 12th and 13th centuries, European commerce expanded. The development of ocean-going ships increased trade between Europe and Asia and was followed by the discovery of the Americas.

4. Colonialism and Slave Trade

English

From the 15th century onwards, European colonialism expanded. Along with trade in exotic commodities, slave trade emerged.

Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish and British traders forcibly transported African people to the Americas for plantation labour.

The document states that slave trade continued for more than two centuries before being abolished in:

  • Denmark – 1792
  • Great Britain – 1807
  • United States – 1808

5. International Trade after Industrial Revolution

English

The Industrial Revolution increased demand for raw materials such as grains, meat and wool.

Industrialised countries:

  • Imported primary products/raw materials
  • Exported value-added manufactured products

During the later 19th century, industrial nations increasingly became important customers of one another.

During World Wars I and II, countries introduced trade taxes and quantitative restrictions. After the wars, GATT helped reduce tariffs.

6. GATT and WTO

GATT एवं WTO

English

In 1948, the General Agreement for Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was formed to reduce customs tariffs and other restrictions.

In 1994, members decided to establish a permanent organisation, and from 1 January 1995, GATT was transformed into the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Main functions of WTO:

  • Establish rules for global trade
  • Promote free and fair trade
  • Resolve trade disputes between member countries
  • Cover trade in services
  • Deal with issues such as intellectual property rights

The chapter states that the WTO headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland, and India is one of its founding members.

7. Criticism of WTO

WTO की आलोचना

English

The document also presents criticisms of WTO and free trade:

  • Free trade may increase the gap between rich and poor.
  • Powerful countries may focus on their own commercial interests.
  • Developed countries may not fully open their markets to developing countries.
  • Health, workers' rights, child labour and environmental issues may receive insufficient attention.

8. Why Does International Trade Exist?

English

International trade is mainly the result of specialisation in production and division of labour.

Its basic principles include:

  • Comparative advantage
  • Complementarity
  • Transferability of goods and services

Specialisation allows countries to concentrate on products or services in which they have advantages and exchange them with other countries.

Therefore, international trade can be mutually beneficial.

(Comparative Advantage)
(Complementarity)
(Transferability)

9. Basis of International Trade

The chapter gives five major factors:

1. Difference in National Resources

Resources are unevenly distributed because of differences in:

  • Geology
  • Relief
  • Soil
  • Climate
  • Mineral resources

For example, cold regions may produce wool, while tropical regions can produce bananas, rubber and cocoa.

2. Population Factors

Population size, distribution and diversity influence the type and volume of goods traded.

Cultural differences also create specialised handicrafts valued internationally, such as:

  • Chinese porcelain and brocade
  • Iranian carpets
  • North African leather work

3. Stage of Economic Development

Agricultural countries tend to exchange agricultural products for manufactured goods, while industrialised countries export machinery and finished goods and import food grains and raw materials.

4. Foreign Investment

Foreign investment can increase trade in developing countries by providing capital for industries such as:

  • Mining
  • Oil drilling
  • Heavy engineering
  • Lumbering
  • Plantation agriculture

5. Transport

In earlier times, poor transport restricted trade to local areas. Only high-value commodities such as gems, silk and spices could travel long distances.

Expansion of:

  • Railways
  • Ocean transport
  • Air transport
  • Refrigeration
  • Preservation facilities

expanded the geographical extent of trade.

10. Balance of Trade

English

Balance of Trade records the value/volume of goods and services imported and exported by a country.

Two situations:

Favourable/Positive Balance:
Exports > Imports

Unfavourable/Negative Balance:
Imports > Exports

A persistent negative balance means that a country spends more on imports than it earns from exports and may eventually reduce its financial reserves.

11. Types of International Trade

A. Bilateral Trade |

Trade between two countries based on an agreement concerning specified commodities.

B. Multilateral Trade |

Trade conducted with many countries. A country may trade with several countries and may grant some partners Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status.

12. Free Trade and Trade Liberalisation

English

Opening economies to international trade is called free trade or trade liberalisation.

It is achieved by reducing trade barriers such as tariffs.

Advantages:

  • Goods and services from different countries can compete.
  • Trade can expand.
  • Transport and communication allow goods to travel farther and faster.

However, free trade may create difficulties for developing countries if they do not receive an equal competitive environment.

13. Dumping

English

Dumping means selling a commodity in two countries at different prices for reasons unrelated to production costs.

Cheap dumped goods may harm domestic producers.

14. Regional Trade Blocs

English

Regional Trade Blocs are formed among geographically close countries with similarities and complementarities in trade.

Their objectives include:

  • Encouraging regional trade
  • Reducing trade restrictions
  • Removing tariffs among member countries
  • Promoting free trade within the bloc

The document also points out that different blocs may create difficulties for free trade between different blocs.

15. Benefits and Concerns of International Trade

Benefits |

International trade can lead to:

  • Regional specialisation
  • Higher production
  • Better standard of living
  • Worldwide availability of goods and services
  • Equalisation of prices and wages
  • Diffusion of knowledge and culture

Concerns |

International trade may also cause:

  • Dependence on other countries
  • Uneven development
  • Exploitation
  • Commercial rivalry
  • Environmental damage
  • Pressure on natural resources

The chapter particularly highlights depletion of marine life, deforestation and excessive use of natural resources.

16. Multinational Corporations and Environment

English

The chapter discusses multinational corporations operating in areas such as:

  • Oil
  • Gas
  • Mining
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Agribusiness

It warns that expansion focused only on profit can increase pollution and may not follow sustainable development principles.

17. Gateways of International Trade – Ports

English

Harbours and ports are the chief gateways of international trade. Cargo and passengers move from one part of the world to another through them.

Harbour vs Port

HarbourPort
Place where ships take shelterPart of harbour where cargo is loaded/unloaded
Can be natural or man-madeMan-made
Main function is shelterMain function is handling cargo

Port: Harbour

18. Importance of Ports

English

The importance of a port is judged by:

  • Size/volume of cargo handled
  • Number of ships handled

The quantity of cargo handled is also an indicator of the development level of the port's hinterland.

19. Types of Ports

A. According to Cargo Handled

1. Industrial Ports |

Handle bulk cargo such as:

  • Grain
  • Sugar
  • Ore
  • Oil
  • Chemicals

2. Commercial Ports |

Handle:

  • General cargo
  • Packaged goods
  • Manufactured goods
  • Passenger traffic

3. Comprehensive Ports |

Handle both bulk and general cargo in large quantities. Most major world ports fall into this category.

20. Ports According to Location

1. Inland Ports |

Located away from the sea but connected to it through a river or canal.

Examples:

  • Manchester - United Kingdom
  • Memphis - United States
  • Basel - Switzerland
  • Mannheim - Germany
  • Duisburg - Germany
  • Kolkata - India

Kolkata is located on the Hooghly River, a branch of the Ganga.

2. Out Ports |

Deep-water ports constructed away from the actual/parent port. They receive large ships that cannot enter the parent port.

Example: Athens – Piraeus.

21. Ports According to Specialised Functions

Oil Ports |

Deal with oil processing and shipping.

They may be:

  • Tanker ports
  • Refinery ports

The chapter gives examples such as Maracaibo, La Skhira, Tripoli and Abadan.

Naval Ports |

Have mainly strategic importance, serve warships and provide repair facilities.

Indian examples: Kochi and Karwar.

22. Important Sea Ports for Map Work
