1. Identify the following with the help of map
reading.
(i) The island groups of India lying in the Arabian
Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
Answer - (i) Lakshadweep islands in the Arabian Sea and Andaman
and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal
(iii) The States through which the Tropic of Cancer
passes.
Answer - The Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) passes
through 8 States of India - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West
Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.
(iv) The northernmost latitude in degrees.
Answer - 37°6’N
(v) The southernmost latitude of the Indian mainland
in degrees.
Answer - 8°4’N
Note - The southernmost point of the Indian
Union is 6°45’N located at the Andaman
and Nicobar islands called 'Indira Point' that got
submerged under the sea water in 2004 during the Tsunami on 26th
December.
(vi) The eastern and the western-most longitude in degrees.
Answer – (vi) Easternmost longitude is 97°25’E
and Westernmost longitude is 68°7’N
(vii) The place situated on
the three seas.
Answer – Kanyakumari, a town in
Tamil Nadu is situated on (8°4’N) three
water bodies, namely; Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal.
(viii) The strait separating
Sri Lanka from India.
Answer – The Palk Strait separates Sri Lanka from
India. It lies in Tamil Nadu in India and the Mannar district of the Northern
Province of Sri Lanka.
(ii) The countries constituting Indian subcontinent.
Answer - (ii) India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives,
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka constitute Indian sub-continent.
The term
"subcontinent" signifies a "subdivision of a continent which has
a distinct geographical, political, or cultural identity" and also a
"large land mass somewhat smaller than a continent”.
(ix) The Union Territories of India.
Answer – There are currently eight union territories in India,
namely Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and
Daman and Diu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
