🌐 English Summary – India: Location

The location of a country is not merely a point on a map. Its latitude, longitude, position in relation to seas and neighbouring countries and its overall size influence its climate, physical diversity, economic activities and interaction with other regions.

Teacher's Key Idea: India’s location should be understood through three connected questions — Where is India?, How large is its extent? and What are the geographical consequences of this location?

1. Location and Geographical Extent

India occupies an important position in the south-central part of Asia. The mainland stretches from the Himalayan region in the north to Kanniyakumari in the south and from Arunachal Pradesh in the east to Gujarat in the west.

Its geographical position connects the country with the Indian Ocean and with the regions lying to its east and west. The maritime position of the Indian Peninsula has historically supported contacts through sea routes and, in the modern age, through air routes as well.

2. Latitudinal Extent

The mainland of India extends approximately from 8°4′ N to 37°6′ N latitude. The southernmost point of India's territory extends farther south to about 6°45′ N in the Bay of Bengal.

The large latitudinal extent means that different parts of India experience different geographical conditions. The southern part lies within the tropical zone, whereas the northern part extends into the subtropical or warm temperate zone.

Geographical Significance: Latitudinal extent contributes to variations in temperature, climate, landforms, soils and natural vegetation across India.

3. Longitudinal Extent

India extends approximately from 68°7′ E to 97°25′ E longitude. This gives the country a longitudinal spread of nearly 30 degrees.

Because the Earth rotates from west to east, the Sun rises earlier in the eastern parts of India than in the western parts. The longitudinal extent therefore creates a natural time difference of nearly two hours between the easternmost and westernmost regions.

4. Standard Meridian and Indian Standard Time

To maintain a common standard time throughout the country, India has selected 82°30′ E as its Standard Meridian.

Indian Standard Time (IST) is based on this longitude and is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

🎓 Teaching Point: Why only one standard time?

The eastern and western parts of India experience sunrise at different times, but maintaining one standard time makes administration, communication, transport, education and economic activities easier to coordinate throughout the country.

Remember: Local solar time may differ from place to place, but the official clock time remains the same.

5. Size of India

India has an area of about 3.28 million square kilometres. It accounts for approximately 2.4% of the world's land surface area and is the seventh-largest country in the world by area.

Feature Important Information
Approximate area 3.28 million sq. km
Share of world's land area About 2.4%
World ranking by area Seventh
Mainland coastline About 6,100 km
Entire geographical coastline including islands About 7,517 km

6. Size and Physical Diversity

The large size of India has contributed to remarkable physical diversity. Within the country we find high mountains, extensive river plains, plateaus, forested hills, deserts, coastal regions and island groups.

The northern boundary is strongly influenced by the Himalayas, while the southern part projects into the Indian Ocean. The combination of mountains, plains, plateaus, deserts, coasts and islands gives India a highly varied physical environment.

🧠 Geography Memory Link

Location → Size → Physical Diversity → Resources → Human Activities

This is an important chain for understanding the chapter. India’s geographical position and large size help explain why different regions possess different physical conditions and resources.

7. India and Its Neighbours

India occupies a strategic position in South Asia. Its land boundaries connect it with several neighbouring countries, while its maritime position connects it with countries across the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka and Maldives are important island neighbours located in the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka is separated from India by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait.

Map Skill: While studying this chapter, always locate India’s neighbouring countries, the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar on a map.

8. Why India's Location Matters

  • India occupies a strategically important position in Asia.
  • Its southern projection into the Indian Ocean supports maritime connections.
  • Its large latitudinal extent contributes to climatic and ecological diversity.
  • Its longitudinal extent creates a significant difference in local solar time.
  • Its size supports a wide range of physical resources.
  • Its location has historically encouraged interaction with neighbouring regions.

👨‍🏫 Abhimanyu Sir's Teaching Insight

Concept

👨‍🏫 Teaching Insight
