🌐 English Summary – Structure and Physiography

The physical features of India are the result of a long geological history. The present relief has developed through the interaction of endogenic forces, exogenic processes, tectonic movements, erosion and deposition.

Core Concept: India's present physiography can be understood through the relationship between structure + process + stage of development.

1. Geological Structure of India

India has considerable geological diversity. On the basis of geological structure and formations, the country may broadly be understood through three major geological divisions:

  • The Peninsular Block
  • The Himalayas and other Peninsular Mountains
  • The Indo-Ganga-Brahmaputra Plain

The Peninsular Block is ancient, rigid and comparatively stable. In contrast, the Himalayan mountain system is geologically young and tectonically active. The Northern Plain represents a vast depositional surface formed mainly by river sediments.

2. Meaning of Physiography

Physiography refers to the physical features and relief characteristics of a region. It is the outcome of geological structure, geomorphic processes and the stage of development.

India displays great physiographic diversity. The northern part is dominated by high mountains and deep valleys, while the southern part consists mainly of the stable Peninsular Plateau. Between these two lies the extensive Northern Plain.

🧠 Remember the Basic Framework

Geological Structure → Geomorphic Processes → Relief → Physiography

3. The Northern and North-eastern Mountains

The Northern and North-eastern Mountains include the Himalayas and the North-eastern hills. The Himalayas consist of a series of parallel mountain ranges.

The Great Himalayan range, also called the central axial range, extends for about 2,500 km from west to east, while its width varies approximately between 160 and 400 km.

The Himalayas form a major physical barrier between the Indian subcontinent and Central and East Asia. They also function as an important climatic, drainage and cultural divide.

Geographical Significance: The Himalayas influence climate, river systems, natural vegetation, agriculture and human settlement patterns.

Major Himalayan Features

  • Young fold mountain system
  • Parallel mountain ranges
  • High peaks and deep valleys
  • Fast-flowing youthful rivers
  • Gorges, V-shaped valleys, rapids and waterfalls
  • High tectonic activity

4. The Northern Plain

The Northern Plain has been formed mainly by the alluvial deposits brought by the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra river systems.

The plain extends approximately 3,200 km from east to west and its average width varies between about 150 and 300 km. The maximum depth of alluvial deposits may reach approximately 1,000–2,000 m.

Bhabar, Tarai, Bhangar and Khadar

Region Main Characteristics
Bhabar Narrow belt along the Shiwalik foothills. Streams carrying pebbles and boulders often disappear into the porous deposits.
Tarai South of Bhabar. Streams re-emerge and create marshy and swampy conditions. Dense natural vegetation is common.
Bhangar Older alluvial deposits lying above the active floodplain.
Khadar Newer alluvial deposits associated with the active floodplain and periodic deposition.

The Northern Plain contains mature fluvial landforms such as meanders, ox-bow lakes, sand bars and braided channels. The Brahmaputra plains are particularly known for riverine islands and sand bars and are frequently affected by floods.

5. The Peninsular Plateau

The Peninsular Plateau is one of the oldest and most stable landmasses of India. It is mainly composed of ancient crystalline rocks and has undergone repeated uplift, subsidence, faulting and erosion.

On the basis of major relief features, the Peninsular Plateau is divided into:

  • Deccan Plateau
  • Central Highlands
  • Northeastern Plateau

5.1 Deccan Plateau

The Deccan Plateau is bordered by the Western Ghats in the west, the Eastern Ghats in the east and the Satpura, Maikal and Mahadeo ranges in the north.

The Western Ghats are relatively continuous and higher than the Eastern Ghats. Their average elevation is about 1,500 m, with elevation generally increasing towards the south.

Important Peaks: Anaimudi (2,695 m) is the highest peak of the Peninsular Plateau, followed by Doddabetta (2,637 m) in the Nilgiri Hills.

The Western Ghats are the source region of many Peninsular rivers. The Eastern Ghats are discontinuous and have been extensively dissected by rivers such as the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri.

The Western and Eastern Ghats meet in the region of the Nilgiri Hills.

5.2 Central Highlands

The Central Highlands lie mainly to the north of the Peninsular Plateau. The Aravalli Range forms an important western boundary, while the Satpura Range forms the northern boundary of the Deccan Plateau.

The Central Highlands generally range between about 700–1,000 m above mean sea level and slope towards the north and northeast.

Important physiographic elements include the Vindhyan and Kaimur ranges and the Rajmahal Hills. The Chotanagpur Plateau is particularly important for its rich mineral resources.

5.3 Northeastern Plateau

The Northeastern Plateau is an extension of the Peninsular Plateau. The Meghalaya Plateau and Karbi Anglong are important parts of this region.

The Meghalaya Plateau is divided into: Garo Hills, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills.

The region is rich in minerals such as coal, iron ore, sillimanite, limestone and uranium. Heavy rainfall and prolonged erosion have produced a highly dissected surface.

6. The Indian Desert

The Great Indian Desert lies to the northwest of the Aravalli Hills. It is characterised by an undulating surface, longitudinal sand dunes and barchans.

The region receives less than about 150 mm rainfall annually in many areas and has an arid climate with sparse vegetation.

The Luni is an important river of the southern part. Because of low precipitation and high evaporation, the region faces water deficiency.

Some streams disappear after flowing for a certain distance, producing examples of inland drainage. Lakes and playas may contain brackish water, which can be used for salt production.

7. The Coastal Plains

India's long coastline can broadly be divided into Western Coastal Plains and Eastern Coastal Plains.

Feature Western Coastal Plains Eastern Coastal Plains
Nature Submerged coastal plain Emergent coastal plain
Width Generally narrow Generally broader
Major river feature Rivers generally do not form large deltas Large deltas are well developed
Important divisions Kachchh–Kathiawar, Konkan, Goan, Malabar Northern Circars and Coromandel

Western Coastal Plains

The western coast extends from Gujarat towards Kerala. Important sections include the Kachchh and Kathiawar coast, Konkan coast, Goan coast and Malabar coast.

The western coastal plain is generally narrow and its rivers do not form major deltas. The Malabar Coast is famous for Kayals or backwaters, which support fishing, inland navigation and tourism.

Eastern Coastal Plains

The eastern coastal plain is broader and is an example of an emergent coast. Large deltas have been formed by rivers such as the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri.

The broad continental shelf along parts of the eastern coast influences the development of ports and harbours.

8. The Islands

India has two major island groups — one in the Bay of Bengal and the other in the Arabian Sea.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar group lies in the Bay of Bengal. The two broad groups are separated by the Ten Degree Channel.

These islands are largely considered to represent elevated portions of submarine mountains, although some smaller islands are volcanic in origin.

Important Fact: Barren Island in the Andaman and Nicobar group is India's only active volcano.

Lakshadweep and Minicoy

The islands of the Arabian Sea include Lakshadweep and Minicoy. They are located off the Kerala coast and are mainly formed from coral deposits.

The island group is divided broadly by the Nine Degree Channel.

🧠 Island Memory Trick

Bay of Bengal → Andaman & Nicobar → Ten Degree Channel

Arabian Sea → Lakshadweep & Minicoy → Coral Islands → Nine Degree Channel

👨‍🏫 Abhimanyu Sir's Teaching Insight

Ancient Peninsular Block → Young Himalayas → Sedimentary Northern Plain → Plateau & Desert → Coastal Plains → Islands

Concept

👨‍🏫 Abhimanyu Sir's Teaching Insight
