🌐 English Summary

1. Movement of Ocean Water

Ocean water is dynamic rather than stationary. Its movement is controlled by physical properties such as temperature, salinity and density, along with external forces such as the Sun, Moon and winds.

Ocean-water movements can broadly be divided into horizontal and vertical movements.

  • Horizontal movement: waves and ocean currents.
  • Vertical movement: tides, upwelling and sinking of water.
Key Idea: In a current, water itself moves from one place to another, whereas in a wave, mainly energy travels forward while water particles move in small circular paths.

2. Waves

Waves represent the transfer of energy across the ocean surface. Wind is the principal source of energy for most ocean waves.

As waves approach the coast, their speed decreases because of friction with the sea floor. When water depth becomes less than about half the wavelength, the wave begins to break.

Important Characteristics of Waves

  • Crest: Highest point of a wave.
  • Trough: Lowest point of a wave.
  • Wave Height: Vertical distance between trough and crest.
  • Amplitude: Half of the wave height.
  • Wave Period: Time between two successive crests or troughs.
  • Wavelength: Horizontal distance between successive crests.
  • Wave Speed: Rate at which a wave travels through water.
  • Wave Frequency: Number of waves passing a fixed point in one second.

3. Tides

Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea level, mainly caused by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun.

Gravitational attraction and centrifugal force together produce two major tidal bulges on the Earth.

Types of Tides by Frequency

  • Semi-diurnal Tide: Two high tides and two low tides in a day, generally of nearly similar height.
  • Diurnal Tide: One high tide and one low tide in a day.
  • Mixed Tide: Tides having considerable variation in height.

Spring Tides

When the Sun, Moon and Earth are approximately in a straight line, their combined gravitational effect produces higher tidal ranges. These are called spring tides and occur around the full Moon and new Moon.

Neap Tides

When the Sun and Moon are approximately at right angles to each other, their gravitational effects partly counteract each other. The resulting tidal range is smaller and these are called neap tides.

Importance of Tides

  • Useful for navigation.
  • Helpful to fishermen in planning activities.
  • Assist in desilting estuaries.
  • Help remove polluted water from estuaries.
  • Can be used for generating tidal power.
Remember:
Spring Tide = Higher tidal range
Neap Tide = Lower tidal range

4. Ocean Currents

Ocean currents are continuous movements of large volumes of ocean water along a definite path and direction. They are broadly influenced by primary and secondary forces.

Major Forces Influencing Ocean Currents

  • Solar heating
  • Winds
  • Gravity
  • Coriolis force
  • Differences in water density

Solar heating causes expansion of water. Winds push surface water, gravity produces differences in water level, while the Coriolis force changes the direction of moving water.

Coriolis Effect: Ocean-water movement is deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.

Gyres

Large circular systems of ocean-water movement produced by the interaction of winds and the Coriolis force are called gyres.

Classification by Depth

  • Surface Currents: Generally occur in the upper part of the ocean and constitute about 10% of ocean water.
  • Deep Water Currents: Account for about 90% of ocean water and are strongly influenced by density and gravity.

Classification by Temperature

  • Cold Currents: Carry relatively cold water into warmer regions.
  • Warm Currents: Carry relatively warm water into colder regions.

5. Effects of Ocean Currents

Ocean currents redistribute heat between different latitude belts and therefore influence coastal climate and human activities.

  • Cold currents can lower coastal temperatures and are often associated with dry conditions and fog in some regions.
  • Warm currents can make coastal climates warmer and more humid.
  • The meeting of warm and cold currents encourages mixing and plankton growth.
  • Such mixing zones are among the world's important fishing grounds.
Geography Connection: Ocean currents are not merely movements of water; they act as a global heat-redistribution system and influence climate, fisheries and human activities.

Spring Tide

Neap Tide
