Chapter 12, Water (Oceans), explains the importance of water on the earth, the hydrological cycle, the relief of the ocean floor, the distribution of ocean temperature and the salinity of ocean water.
The chapter helps us understand that oceans are not simply large water bodies. Their floors have mountains, plains, trenches, canyons and other relief features, while ocean water varies horizontally and vertically in temperature and salinity.
1. Hydrological Cycle
Water is a cyclic resource. It continuously moves between oceans, atmosphere, land surface, subsurface and living organisms. This continuous circulation of water in liquid, solid and gaseous forms is called the hydrological cycle.
Evaporation → Condensation → Precipitation → Runoff / Infiltration → Storage → Evaporation
About 91% of the planet's water is found in the oceans. Freshwater is stored mainly in glaciers and ice caps, groundwater, lakes, soil moisture, atmosphere, streams and living organisms.
The amount of renewable water is relatively constant, whereas human demand is increasing. This creates water stress and water crises in different regions. Pollution of rivers further aggravates the problem.
2. Relief of the Ocean Floor
The ocean floor is not flat. It contains mountains, plains, trenches, ridges, canyons, seamounts and other features. These features are associated with tectonic, volcanic and depositional processes.
The oceans are conventionally divided into five major oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic.
3. Major Divisions of the Ocean Floor
The shallow, gently sloping submerged margin of a continent. Its average gradient is about 1° or less and its average width is around 80 km.
Continental Slope
It connects the continental shelf with the ocean basin. Its gradient generally ranges between 2° and 5° and its depth varies roughly from 200 m to 3,000 m.
Deep Sea Plain
These are broad, gently sloping and very smooth parts of ocean basins, generally lying between 3,000 and 6,000 m depth. They are covered mainly by fine sediments.
Oceanic Deeps / Trenches
These are the deepest parts of oceans. They are narrow, steep-sided depressions and are closely associated with active volcanoes, earthquakes and plate movements.
4. Minor Relief Features
Important minor relief features of the ocean floor include:
- Mid-Oceanic Ridge: Long submarine mountain system.
- Seamount: Volcanic mountain rising from the ocean floor but not reaching the surface.
- Submarine Canyon: Deep valley cutting across the continental shelf or slope.
- Guyot: Flat-topped submerged seamount.
- Atoll: Low tropical coral island or reef surrounding a central lagoon/depression.
5. Temperature of Ocean Waters
Ocean water is heated mainly by solar energy. Compared with land, ocean water heats and cools more slowly.
The average surface temperature of ocean water is about 27°C. Temperature generally decreases from the equator towards the poles.
Around 20° latitude → about 22°C
Around 40° latitude → about 14°C
Near the poles → around 0°C
Average decrease → approximately 0.5°C per degree of latitude
6. Factors Affecting Ocean Temperature
- Latitude: Surface temperature decreases from the equator towards the poles.
- Unequal Distribution of Land and Water: The Northern Hemisphere has a larger proportion of land, affecting the thermal conditions of its oceans.
- Prevailing Winds: Winds can move warm surface water away from coasts and cause upwelling of colder water, or pile warm water towards coasts.
- Ocean Currents: Warm currents increase temperatures whereas cold currents lower temperatures.
Warm current → temperature increases
Cold current → temperature decreases
7. Thermocline and Vertical Distribution of Temperature
Ocean temperature generally decreases with increasing depth. The upper ocean receives direct solar heating, while deeper water receives heat mainly through processes such as convection.
The zone in which temperature decreases rapidly with increasing depth is called the thermocline. It generally begins around 100–400 m below the surface and may extend several hundred metres downward.
- Upper warm layer: Around 500 m thick; approximately 20–25°C.
- Thermocline layer: Rapid decrease of temperature with depth; roughly 500–1,000 m thick.
- Deep cold layer: Very cold water extending towards the ocean floor.
8. Salinity of Ocean Waters
Salinity means the total amount of dissolved salts present in seawater. It is normally expressed as parts per thousand (‰ or ppt), based on the amount of salt dissolved in 1,000 g of seawater.
Salinity is controlled mainly by evaporation, precipitation, river-water supply, freezing and melting of ice, winds and ocean currents.
9. Horizontal and Vertical Distribution of Salinity
Salinity varies from place to place because evaporation and freshwater supply are not uniform.
- Red Sea: Very high salinity because of high evaporation.
- Baltic Sea: Low salinity because of large freshwater inflow.
- Mediterranean Sea: Relatively high salinity because of strong evaporation.
- Bay of Bengal: Lower salinity because of large river-water inflow.
- Arabian Sea: Relatively higher salinity because of high evaporation and comparatively less freshwater input.
With depth, salinity generally increases and may form a distinct zone called the halocline, where salinity changes rapidly.
Salinity ↑ → Density ↑ → Denser seawater tends to sink.
Thus, salinity contributes to the stratification of ocean water.

(Continental Slope)
(Deep Sea Plains)
(Oceanic Deeps / Trenches)
(Thermocline)
