🇬🇧 English Summary
1. Early Theories – Origin of the Earth
The origin of the Earth has been explained through several hypotheses proposed by philosophers and scientists.
One of the early and influential explanations was the Nebular Hypothesis associated with Immanuel Kant and later modified by Laplace in 1796.
According to this hypothesis, planets originated from a cloud of material associated with the young Sun. Later, Otto Schmidt and Carl Weizsäcker modified the nebular idea.
The important concept here is that the formation of planets was a gradual process involving collision, condensation and accretion of matter.
2. Modern Theory – Big Bang Theory
The most widely accepted explanation for the origin of the universe discussed in the chapter is the Big Bang Theory, also called the Expanding Universe Hypothesis.
Edwin Hubble provided evidence in the 1920s that the universe is expanding – the galaxies are moving farther apart.
Main stages of the Big Bang:
- All matter of the universe was concentrated in an extremely small volume with extremely high temperature and density.
- A tremendous explosion led to rapid expansion of the universe. The chapter places this event at about 13.7 billion years ago.
- Within the first few minutes, the first atoms began to form. After about 300,000 years, the temperature had fallen sufficiently for atomic matter to form and the universe became transparent.
3. Formation of Stars
The early distribution of matter and energy in the universe was not uniform.
Differences in density produced differences in gravitational forces. Matter began to accumulate, forming the basis of galaxies.
A galaxy contains a very large number of stars.
Stars are believed to have formed from enormous clouds of hydrogen gas called nebulae. Within these clouds, gas became concentrated into denser clumps, eventually giving rise to stars.
4. Light Year – A Key Concept
A light year is a unit of distance, not time.
Light travels at approximately 300,000 km per second.
The distance travelled by light in one year is approximately:
9.461 × 1012 km
5. Formation of Planets
The formation of planets occurred in stages.
Stage 1 – Formation of a rotating disc
Stars originated as gas clouds within a nebula. Gravitational forces caused the formation of a dense core, around which a rotating disc of gas and dust developed.
Stage 2 – Formation of planetesimals
The gas cloud condensed and small rounded objects developed. Through cohesion and mutual attraction, these objects grew into planetesimals.
Stage 3 – Formation of planets
Repeated collision and gravitational attraction caused planetesimals to combine. Eventually, a smaller number of large bodies developed into planets.
6. Evolution of the Earth
The early Earth was completely different from the Earth we see today.
- Hot
- Rocky
- Barren
- Surrounded by a very thin atmosphere dominated by hydrogen and helium
Over a very long period, several processes transformed it into a planet with water, atmosphere and conditions suitable for life.
7. Evolution of the Lithosphere
The early Earth was largely in a volatile state. As its density increased, its internal temperature also increased. Materials began separating according to their densities.
Heavy materials → moved towards the centre
Light materials → moved towards the surface
Iron and other heavy materials moved towards the centre, while lighter materials moved upward.
As the Earth cooled and solidified, its outer surface developed into the crust.
The major layers formed through this process are:
Crust → Mantle → Outer Core → Inner Core
8. Evolution of Atmosphere and Hydrosphere
The present atmosphere is mainly dominated by nitrogen and oxygen, but the early atmosphere was very different.
The evolution of the atmosphere occurred broadly in three stages:
1. Loss of primordial atmosphere
The early atmosphere containing hydrogen and helium was largely lost due to solar winds.
2. Release of gases from Earth's interior
As the Earth cooled, gases and water vapour escaped from its interior. This process is known as degassing.
Volcanic eruptions also contributed gases and water vapour.
The early atmosphere contained large amounts of:
- Water vapour
- Nitrogen
- Carbon dioxide
- Methane
- Ammonia
Free oxygen was very limited.
3. Modification by life
Later, photosynthesis played a major role in changing atmospheric composition and increasing oxygen.
9. Formation of Oceans
As the Earth cooled, water vapour condensed.
Carbon dioxide dissolved in rainwater, contributing to further cooling and condensation.
Heavy rainfall caused water to accumulate in surface depressions, eventually forming oceans.
10. Origin of Life
The early Earth was not suitable for life.
Modern scientific explanations discussed in the chapter view the origin of life as involving chemical processes through which complex organic molecules developed and became capable of reproduction.
Evidence of ancient life is preserved in rocks in the form of fossils.
The chapter suggests that life began developing roughly 3.8 billion years ago.
Summary
