🇬🇧 English Summary
1. Why Should We Study Geography?
We live on the surface of the Earth and our lives are closely connected with our surroundings.
Human beings depend upon natural resources such as land, soil, water, vegetation and animals. With the development of technology, human beings gradually learned to adapt to and modify their physical environment.
Our food habits, clothing, houses and occupations are influenced by geographical conditions.
People + Place + Environment + Resources + Interaction
2. What is Geography?
The Earth is not uniform. It contains mountains, hills, valleys, plains, plateaus, oceans, lakes and deserts.
Human beings have also created cultural features such as villages, cities, roads, railways, ports and markets.
These variations provide the basis for understanding the relationship between the physical environment and social and cultural features.
The term Geography was coined by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes.
Geography = Description of the Earth
3. What, Where and Why?
Geography deals with three important questions:
- What? – What features exist?
- Where? – Where are they located?
- Why? – Why do they occur there?
Geography begins with “Where?” but becomes meaningful when we ask “Why?”
4. Geography as an Integrating Discipline
Geography is a discipline of synthesis. It has close relationships with both natural and social sciences.
Natural sciences include geology, pedology, oceanography, botany, zoology and meteorology.
Social sciences include economics, history, sociology, political science and anthropology.
Climate + Soil + Relief + Water + Technology + Market + Human Decisions
Geography tries to understand how these factors are interconnected in space.
5. Space and Time in Geography
Geography is concerned with location, distribution, concentration, spatial patterns, associations and interrelationships.
Geographical phenomena are not static. Landforms, climate, vegetation, occupations, economic activities and cultural developments change over time.
Therefore, time is an integral part of geographical studies.
Two places may be physically far apart but improvements in transport can reduce the time required to travel between them. Therefore, distance can also be understood through time and accessibility.
6. Branches and Approaches of Geography
Two major approaches are:
- Systematic Approach
- Regional Approach
Alexander von Humboldt is associated with the Systematic Approach, while Karl Ritter is associated with the Regional Approach.
7. Systematic and Regional Approaches
| Systematic Approach | Regional Approach |
|---|---|
| A particular geographical phenomenon is studied across different places. | A particular region is studied through its different geographical phenomena. |
| One phenomenon → Many Places | One Region → Many Phenomena |
8. Dualism in Geography
Physical Geography focuses mainly on the physical environment, whereas Human Geography focuses mainly on human activities.
However, human beings are also an integral part of nature. Human beings adapt to their environment and also modify it through technology.
Human–Environment Interaction
9. Branches Based on Systematic Approach

- Geomorphology – Landforms and their evolution
- Climatology – Atmosphere, weather and climate
- Hydrology – Water realm
- Soil Geography – Soil formation, types, distribution and use

Geography uses various methods and techniques to understand geographical phenomena.
- Geographical Thought
- Human Ecology / Land and Human Interaction
- Cartography
- Computer Cartography
- Quantitative / Statistical Techniques
- Field Survey Methods
- Remote Sensing
- GIS
- GPS
12. Physical Geography and Its Importance
Physical Geography studies the major components of the physical environment.
| Component | Major Areas |
|---|---|
| Lithosphere | Landforms, relief, drainage and physiography |
| Atmosphere | Weather, climate, temperature, pressure, winds and precipitation |
| Hydrosphere | Oceans, seas, lakes and water-related features |
| Biosphere | Life forms and ecological relationships |
| Soil | Formation, characteristics and role in the biosphere |
13. Abhimanyu Sir's Focus

Graphos = वर्णन
Geography = पृथ्वी का वर्णन
Systematic Approach
Regional Approach
Phenomena |
