This summary is prepared from the NCERT Chapter, keeping its terminology and exam-oriented points. The chapter begins by explaining that land is used for production, residence, recreation, transport, settlements, forests, agriculture and grazing.


1. Land Resources & Land Use Categories

भूमि संसाधन एवं भूमि उपयोग की श्रेणियाँ

Land is a fixed natural resource, and different types of land are suitable for different purposes. Land-use records are maintained by the Land Revenue Department, while the Survey of India measures the geographical area of administrative units. Reporting area and geographical area are therefore different concepts.

Main Land-use Categories / प्रमुख भूमि-उपयोग श्रेणियाँ

  1. Forests — वन
    • Forest area in land records means the area demarcated by the government for forest growth.
    • It may increase without an actual increase in forest cover.
    • सरकारी अभिलेखों में वन के रूप में दर्ज क्षेत्र वास्तविक वन आवरण से अलग हो सकता है।
  2. Barren and Wastelands — बंजर एवं व्यर्थ भूमि
    • Includes barren hills, deserts, ravines etc.
    • Normally cannot be brought under cultivation with available technology.
    • इसमें बंजर पहाड़ी क्षेत्र, मरुस्थलीय भूमि तथा खड्ड आदि आते हैं।
  3. Land under Non-agricultural Uses — गैर-कृषि उपयोग की भूमि
    • Includes settlements, roads, canals, industries, shops and infrastructure.
    • Expansion of secondary and tertiary activities increases this category.
    • बस्तियों, सड़कों, नहरों, उद्योगों तथा दुकानों आदि की भूमि इसमें शामिल है।
  4. Permanent Pastures and Grazing Lands — स्थायी चरागाह एवं चराई भूमि
    • Mostly owned by village Panchayats or government.
    • Panchayat-owned land is a Common Property Resource (CPR).
  5. Miscellaneous Tree Crops and Groves — विविध वृक्ष फसल एवं उपवन
    • Includes orchards and fruit trees.
    • Much of this land is privately owned.
  6. Culturable Wasteland — कृषि योग्य बंजर भूमि
    • Land left uncultivated for more than five years.
    • It can be reclaimed and brought under cultivation.
  7. Current Fallow — वर्तमान परती भूमि
    • Land left uncultivated for one or less than one agricultural year.
    • It allows the soil to regain fertility naturally.
  8. Fallow other than Current Fallow — वर्तमान परती के अलावा परती भूमि
    • Cultivable land left unused for more than one year but less than five years.
    • More than five years → culturable wasteland.
  9. Net Area Sown — शुद्ध बोया गया क्षेत्र
    • Physical area on which crops are actually sown and harvested.

2. Land-use Changes in India

भारत में भूमि-उपयोग में परिवर्तन

Land-use changes mainly depend on changes in economic activities. Land itself is fixed in area, while economic activities change with time.

Three major economic changes / तीन प्रमुख परिवर्तन

1. Growth in size of economy — अर्थव्यवस्था के आकार में वृद्धि
Population, income and technology increase → pressure on land increases → marginal lands are brought into use.

जनसंख्या, आय और तकनीक में वृद्धि → भूमि पर दबाव बढ़ता है → सीमांत भूमि भी उपयोग में आने लगती है।

2. Change in economic structure — आर्थिक संरचना में परिवर्तन
Secondary and tertiary sectors grow faster than agriculture → agricultural land gradually shifts towards non-agricultural uses, especially around large cities.

द्वितीयक एवं तृतीयक क्षेत्र कृषि की तुलना में तेजी से बढ़ते हैं → कृषि भूमि का गैर-कृषि उपयोग में परिवर्तन होता है।

3. Continued pressure on agricultural land — कृषि भूमि पर लगातार दबाव
Even though agriculture's contribution to GDP declines, the population dependent on agriculture and the number of people needing food continue to increase.

कृषि का GDP में योगदान घटने के बावजूद कृषि पर निर्भर जनसंख्या और खाद्य आवश्यकता बढ़ती रहती है।

1950–51 to 2014–15

The document shows that four categories increased:

  • Forest
  • Non-agricultural uses
  • Current fallow
  • Net area sown

Four categories declined:

  • Barren and wasteland
  • Culturable wasteland
  • Pastures and grazing lands
  • Fallow lands

The increase in non-agricultural land was the highest, mainly because of industrialisation, expansion of services, infrastructure and settlements.


3. Common Property Resources (CPRs)

साझा संपत्ति संसाधन

Land ownership can broadly be divided into:

Private Land — निजी भूमि
Owned by an individual or group.

Common Property Resources — साझा संपत्ति संसाधन
Resources meant for community use, where members have rights of access and use along with specified responsibilities.

Examples / उदाहरण

  • Community forests — सामुदायिक वन
  • Pasture lands — चरागाह
  • Village water bodies — गाँव के जल निकाय
  • Other public spaces — अन्य सार्वजनिक स्थान

Importance / महत्व

CPRs provide:

  • Fodder for livestock — पशुओं के लिए चारा
  • Fuel for households — घरेलू ईंधन
  • Fruits, nuts, fibre and medicinal plants — फल, मेवे, रेशा एवं औषधीय पौधे

They are particularly important for landless and marginal farmers and weaker sections. They are also important for rural women because they are often involved in collecting fuel and fodder.


4. Agricultural Land Use in India

भारत में कृषि भूमि का उपयोग

Agriculture is a purely land-based activity, so land is especially important for people dependent on agriculture. Lack of access to land is closely related to rural poverty, while land quality directly affects agricultural productivity.

Total Cultivable Land

कुल खेती योग्य भूमि

Total cultivable land can be estimated by adding:

Net Sown Area + All Fallow Lands + Culturable Wasteland

कुल खेती योग्य भूमि = शुद्ध बोया गया क्षेत्र + सभी परती भूमि + कृषि योग्य बंजर भूमि.

India has limited scope for bringing additional land under net sown area. Therefore, land-saving technologies and higher land-use intensity are important.

Cropping Intensity / फसल तीव्रता

Cropping Intensity = Gross Cropped Area / Net Sown Area × 100

Higher cropping intensity means obtaining more output from the same land during an agricultural year.


5. Cropping Seasons in India

भारत में कृषि ऋतुएँ

There are three major cropping seasons in northern and interior India:

Kharif crops depend largely on the Southwest Monsoon, while rabi crops benefit from lower winter temperatures. Zaid is grown between rabi and kharif, generally with irrigation.

In southern India, the distinction between seasons is less pronounced because temperatures remain sufficiently high for tropical crops throughout the year when adequate soil moisture is available.


6. Types of Farming

खेती के प्रकार

On the basis of the main source of moisture:

A. Irrigated Farming — सिंचित खेती

Two forms:

Protective Irrigation — सुरक्षात्मक सिंचाई

  • Protects crops from soil-moisture deficiency.
  • Irrigation supplements rainfall.
  • Aim: provide moisture to the maximum possible area.

Productive Irrigation — उत्पादक सिंचाई

  • Provides sufficient moisture to obtain high productivity.
  • Water input per unit area is higher than protective irrigation.

B. Rainfed Farming — वर्षा आधारित/बारानी खेती

Two forms:

Dryland Farming — शुष्क भूमि खेती

  • Generally found in areas receiving less than 75 cm annual rainfall.
  • Crops include ragi, bajra, moong, gram and guar.
  • Soil-moisture conservation and rainwater harvesting are important.

Wetland Farming — आर्द्र भूमि खेती

  • Rainfall exceeds the soil-moisture requirement during the rainy season.
  • Such areas may face floods and soil erosion.
  • Rice, jute and sugarcane are important crops.

7. Major Crops of India

भारत की प्रमुख फसलें

Cereals — अनाज

Cereals occupy a major share of India's cropped area. They include:

  • Rice — चावल
  • Wheat — गेहूँ
  • Jowar — ज्वार
  • Bajra — बाजरा
  • Maize — मक्का
  • Ragi — रागी

Rice / चावल

Rice is the major staple food for a large part of India's population. It can be grown under diverse agro-climatic conditions. West Bengal can grow three crops—aus, aman and boro.

Pulses / दलहन

  • Rich source of protein.
  • Leguminous crops improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
  • Important pulses: gram and tur.
  • Concentrated largely in dry areas of the Deccan, central plateau and north-western parts.
  • Yields fluctuate because they are largely rainfed.

Oilseeds / तिलहन

Important oilseed crops include:

  • Groundnut — मूंगफली
  • Rapeseed & mustard — रेपसीड एवं सरसों
  • Soyabean — सोयाबीन
  • Sunflower — सूरजमुखी

The document identifies dry regions such as Malwa, Marathwada, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Karnataka plateau as important oilseed areas.


8. Agricultural Development in India

Indian agriculture has experienced major technological and institutional changes.

Green Revolution / हरित क्रांति

The Green Revolution was associated with:

  • HYV seeds — उच्च उपज वाली किस्में
  • Chemical fertilisers — रासायनिक उर्वरक
  • Pesticides — कीटनाशक
  • Irrigation — सिंचाई
  • Farm machinery — कृषि मशीनरी

New wheat varieties came from Mexico and rice varieties from the Philippines. The initial package was particularly successful in irrigated areas of Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. It rapidly increased food-grain production and helped India become self-reliant in food grains.

However, the initial concentration of the Green Revolution in irrigated regions also created regional disparities in agricultural development.

Modern agricultural technology later spread to eastern and central parts of the country.


9. Growth of Agricultural Output & Technology

  • Rice and wheat production and yields increased significantly.
  • Sugarcane, oilseeds and cotton production also increased.
  • Expansion of irrigation played a crucial role.

1. Dependence on Erratic Monsoon

A large part of cultivated land depends directly on rainfall. Uncertain rainfall can cause both droughts and floods.

2. Low Productivity

Per-hectare yields of several crops remain lower than those of many countries. Dryland areas particularly suffer from low yields.

3. Constraints of Financial Resources & Indebtedness

वित्तीय संसाधनों की कमी एवं ऋणग्रस्तता

Modern agricultural inputs are expensive. Small and marginal farmers often have limited savings and may depend on institutional credit or moneylenders. Crop failure and low returns can increase indebtedness.

4. Lack of Land Reforms

भूमि सुधारों का अभाव

Unequal distribution of cultivable land and incomplete implementation of land reforms remain obstacles to agricultural development.

5. Small Farm Size & Fragmentation

छोटे खेत एवं जोतों का विखंडन

Population pressure and division of land among generations have reduced farm size. Small fragmented holdings are often uneconomic.

6. Lack of Commercialisation

व्यावसायीकरण का अभाव

Many small and marginal farmers produce mainly for family consumption rather than the market.

7. Vast Underemployment

विशाल अल्परोजगार

Especially in unirrigated areas, agricultural employment is seasonal. Workers may remain unemployed for several months during the year. The document identifies these as major structural problems of Indian agriculture.


11. Agricultural Diversification

कृषि विविधीकरण

The chapter highlights the need to diversify agriculture beyond conventional crop production.

Important activities include:

  • Dairy farming — डेयरी फार्मिंग
  • Poultry — मुर्गीपालन

  • Animal husbandry — पशुपालन

12. Sustainable Agriculture

The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) aims to make agriculture:

  • More productive — अधिक उत्पादक
  • Sustainable — टिकाऊ
  • Remunerative — लाभकारी
  • Climate-resilient — जलवायु अनुकूल

It promotes location-specific integrated/composite farming systems and conservation of soil and moisture. The document also mentions promotion of organic farming through schemes such as Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and Rashtriya Vikas Yojana (RKVY).
