A mineral is a natural substance of organic or inorganic origin having definite chemical and physical properties. India has a rich variety of minerals because of its varied geological structure. Mineral resources provide the necessary base for industrial development.

खनिज कार्बनिक या अकार्बनिक मूल का प्राकृतिक पदार्थ है, जिसमें निश्चित रासायनिक एवं भौतिक गुण होते हैं। भारत अपनी विविध भू-वैज्ञानिक संरचना के कारण खनिज संसाधनों की समृद्ध विविधता से संपन्न है। खनिज संसाधन देश के औद्योगिक विकास का आवश्यक आधार हैं।

2. Classification of Minerals

खनिजों का वर्गीकरण

Minerals are broadly divided into:

A. Metallic Minerals – धात्विक खनिज

These are sources of metals.

धात्विक खनिज धातुओं के स्रोत होते हैं।

  • Ferrous minerals – लौह खनिज: Iron ore, manganese, chromite आदि।

  • Non-ferrous minerals – अलौह खनिज: Copper, bauxite आदि।

B. Non-Metallic Minerals – अधात्विक खनिज

These include:

  • Organic: Coal and petroleum, which are fossil/mineral fuels.

  • Inorganic: Mica, limestone, graphite आदि।

कार्बनिक अधात्विक खनिज: कोयला और पेट्रोलियम।
अकार्बनिक अधात्विक खनिज: अभ्रक, चूना पत्थर, ग्रेफाइट आदि।


3. General Characteristics of Minerals

खनिजों की सामान्य विशेषताएँ

  1. Minerals are unevenly distributed over space.
    खनिज पृथ्वी पर असमान रूप से वितरित हैं।

  2. Good-quality minerals are generally available in smaller quantities than low-quality minerals.
    उच्च गुणवत्ता वाले खनिज सामान्यतः कम मात्रा में पाए जाते हैं।

  3. Minerals are exhaustible resources.
    खनिज समाप्त होने वाले संसाधन हैं।

  4. They take a very long geological time to form.
    इनके निर्माण में बहुत लंबा भू-वैज्ञानिक समय लगता है।

  5. They cannot be immediately replenished when exhausted.
    समाप्त होने पर इनकी तुरंत पुनःपूर्ति नहीं की जा सकती।

  6. Therefore, minerals must be conserved and used carefully.
    इसलिए खनिजों का संरक्षण एवं विवेकपूर्ण उपयोग आवश्यक है।


4. Distribution of Minerals in India

भारत में खनिजों का वितरण

  • Most metallic minerals occur in the Peninsular Plateau, particularly in old crystalline rocks.
    अधिकांश धात्विक खनिज प्रायद्वीपीय पठार की पुरानी क्रिस्टलीय चट्टानों में पाए जाते हैं।

  • More than 97% of coal reserves occur in the valleys of Damodar, Sone, Mahanadi and Godavari.
    97% से अधिक कोयला भंडार दामोदर, सोन, महानदी और गोदावरी की घाटियों में पाए जाते हैं।

  • Petroleum occurs mainly in sedimentary basins of Assam, Gujarat and Mumbai High.

1. North-Eastern Plateau Region – उत्तर-पूर्वी पठारी क्षेत्र
Jharkhand, Odisha Plateau, West Bengal and parts of Chhattisgarh.
मुख्य खनिज: Iron ore, coal, manganese, bauxite, mica.

2. South-Western Plateau Region – दक्षिण-पश्चिमी पठारी क्षेत्र
Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu uplands and Kerala.
मुख्य खनिज: Ferrous metals, bauxite, high-grade iron ore, manganese and limestone.

3. North-Western Region – उत्तर-पश्चिमी क्षेत्र
Aravalli region of Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat.

4. Himalayan Belt – हिमालयी पेटी
Copper, lead, zinc, cobalt and tungsten occur here. Assam also has mineral oil deposits.

हिमालयी क्षेत्र में: तांबा, सीसा, जस्ता, कोबाल्ट और टंगस्टन पाए जाते हैं तथा असम घाटी में खनिज तेल के भंडार हैं।


5. Ferrous Minerals

लौह खनिज

Ferrous minerals include iron ore, manganese and chromite. They provide a strong base for metallurgical industries.

लौह खनिजों में लौह अयस्क, मैंगनीज एवं क्रोमाइट शामिल हैं। ये धातुकर्म उद्योगों के विकास का मजबूत आधार हैं।

5.1 Iron Ore – लौह अयस्क

India has abundant iron ore resources and major deposits of hematite and magnetite.

भारत में लौह अयस्क के प्रचुर भंडार हैं तथा हेमेटाइट और मैग्नेटाइट प्रमुख प्रकार हैं।

Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

6. Manganese

मैंगनीज

Manganese is an important raw material for smelting iron ore and manufacturing ferro-alloys. It is mainly associated with the Dharwar geological system.

हिंदी:
मैंगनीज लौह अयस्क के गलाने तथा फेरो-मिश्रधातुओं के निर्माण के लिए महत्वपूर्ण कच्चा माल है। यह मुख्यतः धारवाड़ भू-वैज्ञानिक प्रणाली से संबंधित है।

Major Producers – प्रमुख उत्पादक

बॉक्साइट को छोड़कर भारत में अलौह धात्विक खनिजों की उपलब्धता अपेक्षाकृत कम है।


7.1 Bauxite – बॉक्साइट

Bauxite is the ore used for manufacturing aluminium.

बॉक्साइट एल्युमिनियम के निर्माण में प्रयुक्त होने वाला अयस्क है।

It is mainly associated with laterite rocks and occurs extensively in plateaus, hill ranges and some coastal areas of Peninsular India.
