Chapter 5 Summary
This chapter explains how internal and external forces continuously modify the Earth's surface through weathering, mass movement, erosion, deposition and soil formation.
🇬🇧 English Medium — Chapter Summary
1. Why is the Earth's Surface Uneven?
The Earth's crust is dynamic. It has experienced both vertical and horizontal movements throughout geological history. The present relief of the Earth's surface is therefore the result of the continuous interaction of forces operating from within the Earth and forces acting on its surface.
The two broad groups of forces are:
- Endogenic forces — forces originating within the Earth.
- Exogenic forces — forces operating on or near the Earth's surface, ultimately associated with solar energy and atmospheric processes.
Endogenic forces generally build or elevate portions of the Earth's crust, whereas exogenic processes mainly wear down relief and fill depressions. The opposing action of these two groups helps maintain the varied relief of the Earth's surface.
2. Geomorphic Processes and Geomorphic Agents
The physical and chemical actions of forces on Earth's materials that bring about changes in the configuration of the Earth's surface are called geomorphic processes.
A geomorphic agent is a mobile medium capable of removing, transporting and depositing earth materials.
Important geomorphic agents include:
- Running water
- Groundwater
- Glaciers
- Wind
- Waves and currents
3. Role of Gravity and Gradients
Gravity is a fundamental force behind the movement of materials on the Earth's surface. It produces a tendency for matter to move downslope.
Without gradients there would be little possibility for large-scale movement of materials. Movement generally occurs from higher levels to lower levels and from areas of higher potential to lower potential.
Gravity also contributes to stresses within earth materials and is therefore important in mass movements as well as other geomorphic processes.
4. Endogenic Processes
Endogenic processes derive their energy from within the Earth. Important sources include radioactive energy, rotational and tidal friction and primordial heat.
These internal forces contribute to the development of the Earth's crust through processes such as:
- Diastrophism
- Volcanism
5. Diastrophism
Diastrophism includes processes that move, elevate or build up portions of the Earth's crust.
① Orogenic Processes
Orogeny is associated with mountain building. Strong deformation and folding of the crust occur particularly along long and relatively narrow belts.
② Epeirogenic Processes
Epeirogeny involves broad uplift, subsidence or warping of large parts of the Earth's crust. It is associated with continental-scale changes.
③ Earthquakes
Earthquakes involve relatively sudden movements within the Earth's crust and can contribute to deformation of the surface.
④ Plate Tectonics
Plate tectonics involves the horizontal movement and interaction of lithospheric plates.
Orogeny → Mountain building
Epeirogeny → Continental-scale uplift/warping
6. Volcanism
Volcanism refers to the movement of molten rock or magma towards or onto the Earth's surface and the formation of associated intrusive and extrusive volcanic forms.
Volcanism is therefore an important endogenic process through which internal energy of the Earth modifies the crust.
7. Exogenic Processes
Exogenic processes derive their energy ultimately from the Sun and operate through the atmosphere, water, ice, wind and gravity.
The major exogenic processes discussed in this chapter are:
- Weathering
- Mass wasting / Mass movements
- Erosion
- Transportation
- Deposition
Together, weathering, mass movements, erosion and transportation are commonly discussed under the broader idea of denudation.
8. Stress and the Operation of Exogenic Processes
Gravity acting on sloping surfaces produces downslope movement. Stress is the force applied per unit area. When stresses exceed the resistance of earth materials, deformation, fracture or movement may occur.
Temperature and precipitation are particularly important climatic elements controlling exogenic processes. However, the intensity of geomorphic activity also depends upon the type and structure of rocks.
Rock structure includes factors such as:
- Folds
- Faults
- Joints
- Bedding planes
- Hardness and softness of minerals
- Permeability
- Chemical susceptibility
9. Weathering
Weathering is the mechanical disintegration and chemical decomposition of rocks through the action of weather and climate.
Weathering is primarily an in-situ process, meaning that the material is broken down largely at the place where the rock occurs rather than being transported from one location to another.
There are three major groups of weathering:
- Chemical weathering
- Physical or mechanical weathering
- Biological weathering
10. Chemical Weathering
Chemical weathering changes the chemical composition of minerals and may decompose or dissolve rock material.
Important chemical weathering processes include:
- Solution
- Carbonation
- Hydration
- Oxidation
- Reduction
Water, oxygen, carbon dioxide and heat help accelerate many chemical reactions. Carbon dioxide from biological decomposition can also increase the intensity of chemical weathering.
11. Physical / Mechanical Weathering
Physical weathering breaks rocks into smaller pieces without fundamentally changing their chemical composition.
Important forces include:
- Gravitational pressure and shearing stress
- Expansion caused by temperature changes
- Crystal growth
- Water pressure associated with wetting and drying
- Pressure release
Repeated heating and cooling may produce expansion and contraction. Continued repetition can gradually weaken and fracture rocks.
12. Biological Weathering
Biological activity contributes both mechanical and chemical changes in earth materials.
- Plant roots exert pressure and widen cracks.
- Earthworms, termites and rodents disturb and expose earth materials.
- Decaying organic matter produces acids that assist chemical reactions.
- Human cultivation and disturbance of vegetation can modify weathering.
13. Exfoliation and Significance of Weathering
Exfoliation is a result of certain weathering processes rather than a separate weathering process itself. Curved sheets or shells may peel away from rock surfaces, producing smooth and rounded forms.
Weathering is extremely important because it:
- Breaks rocks into smaller fragments.
- Prepares material for soil formation.
- Aids mass movements and erosion.
- Contributes to reduction of relief.
- Supports the development of vegetation and biodiversity.
- Can help concentrate economically valuable minerals.
14. Mass Movements
Mass movements involve the downslope transfer of rock debris and earth materials mainly under the direct influence of gravity.
Unlike erosion, mass movement does not require a transporting geomorphic agent such as running water, glacier or wind.
Mass movements may range from slow to rapid and may include:
- Creep
- Flow
- Slide
- Fall
15. Causes that Activate Mass Movements
Mass movement becomes more likely when the resistance of slope materials is overcome.
Important triggering conditions include:
- Removal of support from the lower part of a slope
- Increase in slope gradient or height
- Overloading of slopes
- Heavy rainfall and saturation
- Earthquakes
- Explosions and vibrations
- Excessive seepage
- Removal of natural vegetation
16. Landslides
Landslides are relatively rapid and perceptible mass movements. The materials involved are generally relatively dry compared with flow movements.
Important forms include:
- Slump: movement involving backward rotation of a mass.
- Debris slide: rapid sliding or rolling of earth debris without backward rotation.
- Debris fall: nearly free fall of debris from a steep or overhanging face.
- Rockslide: sliding of rock masses along bedding, joint or fault surfaces.
- Rockfall: free falling of rock blocks from steep slopes or faces.
17. Mass Movements in India
In India, landslides and debris avalanches occur particularly frequently in the Himalayas.
The Himalayan region is highly susceptible because of its active tectonic setting, steep slopes, sedimentary and unconsolidated materials and heavy rainfall in many areas.
Landslides also occur in the Western Ghats and Nilgiri region. Their occurrence is influenced by steep slopes, heavy rainfall over short periods and weathering related to temperature variations.
18. Erosion and Transportation
Erosion involves the acquisition and transportation of rock debris. Geomorphic agents remove and carry materials from one place to another.
Major agents include:
- Running water
- Groundwater
- Glaciers
- Wind
- Waves and currents
Abrasion by transported rock debris can further contribute to erosion. Erosion generally lowers relief and continuously modifies the Earth's surface.
19. Different Erosional Agents
Wind, running water and glaciers are strongly influenced by climatic conditions and represent three different states of matter:
- Wind → gaseous medium
- Running water → liquid medium
- Glacier → solid medium
The work of waves is strongly related to coastal location, while the work of groundwater depends greatly upon the lithological characteristics of the region.
Where rocks are sufficiently permeable and soluble and groundwater is available, karst topography may develop.
20. Deposition
Deposition is a consequence of erosion. When an erosional agent loses velocity and therefore transporting energy, the material being carried begins to settle.
Generally, coarser materials are deposited before finer materials. Deposition can fill low-lying areas and depressions.
Weathering → Breakdown → Mass Movement / Erosion → Transportation → Deposition
21. Soil Formation
Soil is a dynamic medium in which physical, chemical and biological activities continue to operate.
Soil formation or pedogenesis depends first upon weathering. Weathered material provides the basic mineral input from which soil develops.
The development of soil generally involves:
- Weathering of rock material
- Colonisation by microorganisms and early vegetation
- Accumulation of organic matter and humus
- Growth of grasses, shrubs and trees
- Mixing of mineral and organic materials
- Development of a mature soil profile
22. Five Soil-Forming Factors
NCERT identifies five basic factors controlling soil formation:
- Parent Material
- Topography
- Climate
- Biological Activity
- Time
23. Parent Material
Parent material may consist of weathered rock debris formed in place or transported deposits.
The texture, structure, mineral composition and chemical composition of parent material influence the characteristics of the developing soil.
24. Topography
Topography influences soil formation through exposure to sunlight, drainage and erosion.
Steep slopes generally have thinner soils because material is more easily removed. Flat or gently sloping areas may develop thicker soil profiles where erosion is slower and water can percolate effectively.
25. Climate
Climate is an important active factor in soil formation. Moisture and temperature strongly influence chemical and biological activity.
Precipitation supplies moisture, while evaporation and humidity influence the movement of water through the soil.
Temperature affects the rate of chemical and biological reactions. Therefore, soil development differs considerably between hot, humid, dry and cold climatic environments.
26. Biological Activity in Soil Formation
Vegetation and organisms add organic matter, improve moisture retention and contribute to nutrient cycling.
Dead plants contribute humus. Bacteria and other organisms participate in decomposition and nutrient transformations.
An important example is nitrogen fixation, in which microorganisms convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms useful to plants.
27. Time
Time is essential for soil development and profile maturation. Young soils developing from recently deposited material may have absent or poorly developed horizons.
With prolonged operation of soil-forming processes, the soil profile becomes increasingly developed and mature.
🎯 Teacher's Takeaway

(Diastrophism)
(Volcanism)
Orogeny
Orogeny →
(Weathering)
(Solution)
(Carbonation)
(Hydration)
(Oxidation)
(Reduction)
(Pressure Release)
Mass Movements
(Creep)
(Flow)
(Slide)
(Fall)
- Debris Slide:
- Debris Fall:
(Parent Material)
(Topography)
(Climate)
(Biological Activity)
(Time)
