Chapter 6 – Landforms and Their Evolution

Class 11 Geography | Fundamentals of Physical Geography

🇬🇧 English Chapter Summary

Landforms are small to medium-sized parts or features of the Earth's surface. Several related landforms together form a landscape. Every landform has a particular shape, size and material and develops through the action of geomorphic processes and geomorphic agents.

Landforms are not permanent. Their shape and character change with time because of erosion, transportation and deposition. Changes in climate and movements of landmasses may also alter the intensity and nature of geomorphic processes.

1. Landforms, Landscape and Evolution

Landform evolution refers to the stages through which a landform develops and changes. The development of landscapes may be understood through stages such as youth, maturity and old age.

Core Idea: A landform is not simply a feature to be memorised. It is the visible result of a continuous interaction between geomorphic processes, agents, materials and time.

2. Running Water

In humid regions, running water is one of the most important geomorphic agents. It operates mainly through two forms: overland flow and linear flow through streams and rivers.

In youthful rivers flowing over steep gradients, downward erosion is dominant. As the gradient becomes gentler, lateral erosion and deposition become increasingly important.

Stages of River Development

  • Youth: Few streams, shallow V-shaped valleys, waterfalls and rapids may occur.
  • Mature: Better drainage integration, deeper valleys and wider floodplains.
  • Old: Gentle gradients, extensive floodplains, meanders, natural levees and oxbow lakes.

Erosional Landforms

  • V-shaped valleys
  • Gorges
  • Canyons
  • Potholes
  • Plunge pools
  • Incised / entrenched meanders
  • River terraces

Depositional Landforms

  • Alluvial fans
  • Deltas
  • Floodplains
  • Natural levees
  • Point bars
  • Meanders and oxbow lakes
Exam Connection: Remember the basic sequence:

Steep slope → Down-cutting → V-shaped valley
Gentle slope → Lateral erosion → Meanders
Deposition → Floodplain / levee / delta

3. Groundwater & Karst Topography

Groundwater becomes especially important in permeable, jointed and cracked rocks. In limestone and dolomite regions, groundwater acts mainly through solution and precipitation.

The characteristic landscape produced by groundwater action in limestone regions is called Karst Topography.

Erosional Features

  • Swallow holes
  • Sinkholes
  • Collapse sinks / Dolines
  • Uvalas or Valley sinks
  • Lapies
  • Limestone pavements
  • Caves

Depositional Features

  • Stalactites – hanging from cave roofs
  • Stalagmites – rising from cave floors
  • Pillars / Columns – formed when stalactites and stalagmites join
Remember:
Stalactite = ceiling
Stalagmite = ground

4. Glaciers

Glaciers are masses of moving ice. They move mainly because of gravity. Their erosional power is considerable because the enormous weight of ice and embedded rock fragments produces abrasion and plucking.

Erosional Landforms

  • Cirques / Corries
  • Horns
  • Arêtes / Serrated ridges
  • U-shaped glacial valleys
  • Hanging valleys
  • Fjords

Depositional Landforms

  • Glacial till
  • Moraines
  • Terminal moraine
  • Lateral moraine
  • Ground moraine
  • Medial moraine
  • Eskers
  • Outwash plains
  • Drumlins
High-value comparison:
River valley → generally V-shaped
Glacial valley → generally U-shaped

5. Waves and Currents

Coastal processes are highly dynamic. Waves, particularly storm waves and tsunami waves, can bring rapid changes to coastal areas. Both erosion and deposition operate along coasts.

Two Broad Coastal Types

  • High Rocky Coasts: Erosional features dominate.
  • Low Sedimentary Coasts: Depositional features dominate.

Erosional Coastal Landforms

  • Sea cliffs
  • Wave-cut terraces
  • Sea caves
  • Sea stacks

Depositional Coastal Landforms

  • Beaches
  • Dunes
  • Bars
  • Barrier bars
  • Spits
  • Lagoons
  • Coastal plains
India Connection:
India's west coast is described in the NCERT chapter as a high, rocky, retreating coast where erosional forms dominate, whereas the east coast is a low, sedimentary coast where depositional forms dominate.

6. Winds and Desert Landforms

Wind is an important geomorphic agent in hot deserts. It operates through deflation, abrasion and impact. However, the chapter also emphasises that desert landforms are not produced by wind alone; sheet floods and weathering also contribute significantly.

Erosional Landforms

  • Pediments
  • Pediplains
  • Playas
  • Deflation hollows
  • Caves / blow-outs
  • Mushroom rocks
  • Table rocks
  • Pedestal rocks

Depositional Landforms – Sand Dunes

  • Barchans
  • Parabolic dunes
  • Seif dunes
  • Longitudinal dunes
  • Transverse dunes
Teacher's Trick: For desert landforms, do not write only "wind". Think:

Weathering + Sheet Flood + Wind → Erosion → Transportation → Deposition

Potholes
Plunge Pools
Entrenched Meanders

  • Point Bars /

Exam Trick:
Stalactite →
Stalagmite →

Cirque

Moraines
Outwash Plains

Cliff

Beach
Dunes
Bars
Barrier

Blow-outs

Teacher's Concept:
