🇬🇧 English Chapter Summary
1. What is Atmosphere?
The atmosphere is the envelope of gases surrounding the Earth. It is essential for the survival of living organisms because it contains life-supporting gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.
The atmosphere is not uniform with height. Its density is greatest near the Earth's surface and decreases as altitude increases.
2. Composition of Atmosphere
The atmosphere is composed mainly of gases, water vapour and dust particles.
The composition of the atmosphere changes with altitude. Oxygen becomes almost negligible at about 120 km, while carbon dioxide and water vapour are largely confined to the lower atmosphere.
3. Atmospheric Gases
Nitrogen
Nitrogen forms the major portion of the atmosphere. It is an important component of the atmospheric system and participates indirectly in biological processes.
Oxygen
Oxygen is essential for respiration in humans and animals and supports combustion and many biological processes.
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide is meteorologically important because it is relatively transparent to incoming solar radiation but absorbs outgoing terrestrial radiation.
It therefore plays an important role in the greenhouse effect. Its concentration has increased significantly due to activities such as the burning of fossil fuels.
Ozone
Ozone is found mainly between about 10 and 50 km above the Earth's surface. It absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation and protects life on Earth.
CO₂ → Greenhouse effect
Ozone → Absorbs harmful UV radiation
4. Water Vapour
Water vapour is a variable component of the atmosphere and generally decreases with altitude.
Its amount is higher in warm and humid tropical regions and much lower in cold and dry desert or polar regions.
Water vapour absorbs part of the incoming solar radiation and helps retain Earth's outgoing heat. In this sense, it acts somewhat like a blanket, preventing excessive heating or cooling.
It also plays an important role in atmospheric stability, instability, condensation, clouds and precipitation.
5. Dust Particles
The atmosphere contains many small solid particles such as sea salts, fine soil, smoke, soot, ash, pollen, dust and disintegrated meteoric particles.
These particles are generally concentrated in the lower atmosphere, although convectional currents may transport them to greater heights.
Dust and salt particles act as hygroscopic nuclei around which water vapour can condense and form clouds.
Dust particles → Hygroscopic nuclei → Condensation → Cloud formation
6. Structure of the Atmosphere
The atmosphere is divided into layers mainly on the basis of temperature conditions.
The five major layers are:
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
- Exosphere
Troposphere → Stratosphere → Mesosphere → Thermosphere → Exosphere
7. Troposphere
The troposphere is the lowermost layer of the atmosphere.
- Average height is about 13 km.
- About 8 km near the poles.
- About 18 km near the equator.
- It is thickest over the equator because strong convection transports heat to greater heights.
- It contains substantial dust particles and water vapour.
- Almost all important weather and climate changes occur in this layer.
- Temperature generally decreases with height.
The boundary separating the troposphere from the stratosphere is called the tropopause.
Because it contains water vapour and dust particles and is the layer in which weather and climate phenomena affecting life on Earth take place.
8. Stratosphere
The stratosphere lies above the tropopause and extends to about 50 km.
Its most important feature is the presence of the ozone layer.
Ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation and protects living organisms from harmful solar radiation.
Stratosphere → Ozone layer → UV absorption → Protection of life
9. Mesosphere
The mesosphere lies above the stratosphere and extends up to about 80 km.
In this layer, temperature again decreases with increasing altitude and may reach about −100°C near the upper boundary.
The upper boundary of the mesosphere is called the mesopause.
10. Thermosphere & Ionosphere
Above the mesosphere lies the thermosphere. Temperature begins to increase with altitude in this layer.
The ionosphere lies roughly between 80 and 400 km and contains electrically charged particles called ions.
The ionosphere is particularly important because radio waves transmitted from Earth can be reflected back by this region.
Ionosphere → Ions → Reflection of radio waves
11. Exosphere
The exosphere is the uppermost atmospheric layer.
The gases in this region are extremely rarefied and the exosphere gradually merges into outer space.
Very little is known about the detailed characteristics of this highest atmospheric region.
12. Elements of Weather and Climate
The important atmospheric elements that influence human life and are subject to change are:
- Temperature
- Atmospheric Pressure
- Wind
- Humidity
- Clouds
- Precipitation
Ozone → UV
(Troposphere)
(Stratosphere)
(Mesosphere)
(Exosphere)
