1. Atmospheric Pressure |

Atmospheric pressure is the weight of a column of air exerted on a unit area from mean sea level to the top of the atmosphere. It is measured in millibars. Average pressure at sea level is about 1013.2 mb.

Atmospheric pressure decreases with height because air becomes less dense upward. Differences in pressure from place to place are one of the major causes of air movement.

2. Pressure and Wind |

Air moves from high-pressure areas towards low-pressure areas. The speed and direction of wind are controlled mainly by the pressure gradient force, frictional force and Coriolis force.

  • Pressure Gradient Force: Strong where isobars are close together.
  • Frictional Force: Greatest near the earth's surface.
  • Coriolis Force: Deflects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.

Coriolis force is absent at the Equator and maximum towards the poles. Therefore tropical cyclones generally do not form near the Equator.

3. General Circulation of the Atmosphere |

The general circulation of the atmosphere is controlled by unequal heating, pressure belts, seasonal migration of pressure belts, distribution of land and water, and the rotation of the earth.

The three major circulation cells are:

  1. Hadley Cell – Tropical region
  2. Ferrel Cell – Middle latitudes
  3. Polar Cell – Polar regions

Together these cells help transfer heat from lower latitudes towards higher latitudes and maintain the planetary circulation system.

4. El Niño and ENSO | एल नीनो एवं ENSO

El Niño refers to the abnormal warming of surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It is closely associated with changes in atmospheric pressure between the Pacific and Australia.

The combined phenomenon of El Niño and Southern Oscillation is called ENSO. Strong ENSO events can produce major variations in weather conditions around the world, including droughts and floods.

5. Local Winds |

Local differences in heating and cooling produce winds operating over relatively small areas.

  • Sea Breeze: Blows from sea to land during the day.
  • Land Breeze: Blows from land to sea during the night.
  • Valley Breeze: Moves upslope during the day.
  • Mountain Wind: Moves downslope during the night.
  • Katabatic Wind: Cold, dense air descending from higher areas.

6. Air Masses |

An air mass is a large body of air having relatively uniform temperature and moisture characteristics. It develops over a relatively homogeneous source region.

Major types include:

  • Maritime Tropical (mT)
  • Continental Tropical (cT)
  • Maritime Polar (mP)
  • Continental Polar (cP)
  • Continental Arctic (cA)

7. Fronts |

When two different air masses meet, the boundary zone between them is called a front. The process of formation of fronts is called frontogenesis.

  • Cold Front
  • Warm Front
  • Stationary Front
  • Occluded Front

Fronts are especially important in the middle latitudes and may produce abrupt changes in temperature, cloud formation and precipitation.

8. Extra-Tropical Cyclones |

Extra-tropical cyclones develop mainly in middle and high latitudes, particularly along the polar front. They are associated with warm and cold fronts and affect large areas.

Unlike tropical cyclones, extra-tropical cyclones may originate over both land and sea and have a clear frontal system.

9. Tropical Cyclones |

Tropical cyclones are intense storms that originate over warm tropical oceans. A sea-surface temperature above about 27°C, Coriolis force, weak vertical wind variation, a pre-existing low-pressure disturbance and upper-level divergence favour their development.

The calm central region is called the eye. Around it lies the eyewall, where winds are strongest and torrential rainfall occurs.

Tropical cyclones are known by different names in different regions: cyclones in the Indian Ocean, hurricanes in the Atlantic and typhoons in the Western Pacific.

10. Thunderstorms and Tornadoes |

Thunderstorms are short-duration but violent storms associated with intense convection, cumulonimbus clouds, thunder, lightning and precipitation.

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a severe thunderstorm towards the ground. Tornadoes are generally associated with middle latitudes and can cause severe destruction over a small area.

Atmospheric Pressure

Pressure and Wind

👨‍🏫 Teacher's Takeaway |
