1. Humidity |
Water is present in the atmosphere in three forms: gaseous, liquid and solid. Water vapour mainly enters the atmosphere through evaporation from water bodies and transpiration from plants.
The amount of water vapour present in the air is called humidity.
- Absolute Humidity: The actual amount of water vapour present in a given volume of air, generally expressed in grams per cubic metre.
- Relative Humidity: The percentage of moisture present in the atmosphere compared with the maximum amount the air can hold at that temperature.
- Saturated Air: Air containing moisture to its full capacity at a particular temperature.
- Dew Point: The temperature at which saturation occurs in a given sample of air.
2. Evaporation |
Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid state into a gaseous state.
Heat is the principal source of energy for evaporation. Increase in temperature increases the capacity of air to absorb and retain moisture.
Greater movement of air also promotes evaporation because saturated air near the surface is continuously replaced by relatively dry air.
3. Condensation |
The transformation of water vapour into liquid water is called condensation. It occurs mainly because of loss of heat.
When moist air cools to a point where it cannot hold additional water vapour, the excess moisture condenses.
In the atmosphere, tiny particles of dust, smoke and salt can act as hygroscopic condensation nuclei. Water vapour condenses around these nuclei.
The most favourable condition for condensation is a decrease in air temperature.
4. Dew and Frost |
Dew forms when moisture is deposited as water droplets on cool solid surfaces such as grass, leaves and stones.
Ideal conditions for dew include clear skies, calm air, high relative humidity and cold, long nights. The dew point must generally be above the freezing point.
Frost forms when condensation occurs at or below 0°C. Instead of water droplets, moisture is deposited as tiny ice crystals.
| Dew | Frost |
|---|---|
| Water droplets | Ice crystals |
| Dew point above freezing point | Dew point at or below freezing point |
5. Fog, Mist and Smog |
When an air mass containing considerable moisture cools rapidly, condensation may occur near the ground and produce fog.
- Fog: A cloud whose base is at or very near the ground. It can reduce horizontal visibility to less than 1 km.
- Mist: Similar to fog but generally has visibility between about 1 km and 2 km and contains relatively more moisture.
- Smog: A condition in which fog is mixed with smoke and other pollutants.
6. Clouds | बादल
Clouds are masses of tiny water droplets or small ice crystals formed by condensation of water vapour in free air at considerable elevations.
The four basic cloud forms described in the chapter are:
- Cirrus: High-level, thin and feathery clouds, generally found around 8,000–12,000 m.
- Cumulus: Cotton-wool-like clouds, generally having a flat base.
- Stratus: Layered clouds covering large portions of the sky.
- Nimbus: Dark, thick clouds associated with precipitation.
Cumulus = Cotton-like
Stratus = Layered
Nimbus = Rain-bearing
7. Precipitation |
When condensed water particles become sufficiently large and the air can no longer support them against gravity, they fall towards the earth's surface. This process is called precipitation.
Precipitation may occur in both liquid and solid forms.
- Rainfall: Liquid precipitation.
- Snowfall: Fine flakes of ice crystals formed when temperature is below freezing.
- Sleet: Frozen raindrops or refrozen melted snow-water.
- Hail: Rounded pieces of solid ice formed through freezing processes inside clouds.
8. Types of Rainfall |
On the basis of origin, rainfall is mainly classified into three types.
① Convectional Rain | संवहनीय वर्षा
Strong heating makes air warm and light. The warm air rises through convection currents, expands and cools. Condensation then produces clouds and heavy rainfall.
It is common in equatorial regions and interior parts of continents, particularly during the hotter part of the day.
When a moist air mass encounters a mountain barrier, it is forced to rise. Rising air expands and cools, causing condensation and rainfall.
The windward slope receives more rainfall, whereas the leeward slope is relatively dry and forms a rain-shadow area.
This type of rainfall is associated with the interaction of air masses and cyclonic systems. It is especially important in the middle latitudes.
9. World Distribution of Rainfall |
Rainfall is not uniformly distributed over the earth. Different places receive different amounts of rainfall and the seasonal distribution also varies.
- In general, rainfall decreases from the Equator towards the poles.
- Coastal regions generally receive more rainfall than continental interiors.
- Oceans receive more rainfall than land because they provide abundant moisture.
- Around 35°–40° N and S, eastern coastal areas generally receive more rainfall than western areas.
- Around 45°–65° N and S, westerlies favour greater rainfall on western margins of continents.
- Mountain ranges parallel to coasts produce greater rainfall on their windward sides and reduced rainfall on leeward sides.
The equatorial belt, windward mountain slopes and many monsoon coastal regions may receive more than 200 cm of annual rainfall.
Interior continental areas may receive moderate rainfall, while some tropical interiors, temperate interiors, rain-shadow areas and high latitude regions receive very low rainfall.

Humidity
Evaporation
Condensation
Dew and Frost
Clouds
Precipitation
Types of Rainfall
Convectional Rain
Orographic / Relief Rain
Cyclonic / Frontal Rain
World Distribution of Rainfall
👨🏫 Teacher's Takeaway |
