Chapter 11 Summary –
World Climate and Climate Change Class 11 Geography | Fundamentals of Physical Geography | Book 1🌐 English Summary
The world climate can be studied by organising climatic information and data into smaller units so that they can be easily understood, described and analysed. Climate classification helps us identify similar climatic conditions in different parts of the world.
Understand this chapter through the sequence: Classification → Koeppen → A–B–C–D–E → Climatic Types → Climate Change → Causes → Greenhouse Gases → Global Warming
1. Approaches to Climate Classification
Three broad approaches are used for classifying climate: empirical, genetic and applied.
- Empirical Classification: Based mainly on observed climatic data, especially temperature and precipitation.
- Genetic Classification: Attempts to organise climates according to their causes.
- Applied Classification: Developed for a particular practical purpose.
2. Koeppen's Scheme of Climate Classification
The most widely used empirical classification scheme was developed by V. Koeppen. He recognised a close relationship between the distribution of vegetation and climate.
Koeppen used temperature and precipitation values and related them to vegetation distribution. He used capital and small letters to represent climatic groups and types.
Koeppen's classification is an empirical classification. It uses mainly temperature and precipitation as climatic variables.
3. Major Climatic Groups — A, B, C, D and E
| Group | Climate | Main Characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| A | Tropical | Average temperature of the coldest month is 18°C or higher. |
| B | Dry | Potential evaporation exceeds precipitation. |
| C | Warm Temperate / Mid-latitude | Average temperature of the coldest month is above −3°C but below 18°C. |
| D | Cold Snow Forest | Average temperature of the coldest month is −3°C or below. |
| E | Cold / Polar | Average temperature of all months is below 10°C. |
A = Tropical | B = Dry | C = Warm Temperate | D = Cold Snow Forest | E = Polar/Cold
4. Koeppen's Letter System
The climatic groups are further divided into climatic types using small letters. These letters indicate the seasonal characteristics of precipitation and the severity of temperature.
- f — No dry season
- m — Monsoon climate
- w — Winter dry season
- s — Summer dry season
The B group is further divided using S for steppe/semi-arid conditions and W for desert conditions.
5. Important Climatic Types
| Code | Climatic Type | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Af | Tropical Wet | No dry season |
| Am | Tropical Monsoon | Monsoonal climate with short dry season |
| Aw | Tropical Wet and Dry | Winter dry season |
| BSh | Subtropical Steppe | Low-latitude semi-arid/dry |
| BWh | Subtropical Desert | Low-latitude arid/dry |
| BSk | Mid-latitude Steppe | Mid-latitude semi-arid/dry |
| BWk | Mid-latitude Desert | Mid-latitude arid/dry |
| Cfa | Humid Subtropical | No dry season, warm summer |
| Cs | Mediterranean | Dry and hot summer |
| Cfb | Marine West Coast | No dry season |
| Df | Humid Continental | No dry season, severe winter |
| Dw | Subarctic | Winter dry and very severe |
| ET | Tundra | No true summer |
| EF | Polar Ice Cap | Perennial ice |
6. Group A — Tropical Humid Climates
Tropical humid climates occur mainly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. High temperatures and the influence of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) make these regions hot and humid.
Af — Tropical Wet Climate
It occurs near the equator. Major regions include the Amazon Basin, western equatorial Africa and the East Indies. Rainfall occurs throughout the year and annual temperature range is very small. Tropical evergreen forests with dense canopy and high biodiversity are characteristic.
Am — Tropical Monsoon Climate
This climate occurs over the Indian subcontinent, northeastern South America and northern Australia. Heavy rainfall occurs mainly in summer, while winter is comparatively dry.
Aw — Tropical Wet and Dry Climate
It occurs north and south of the Af climate regions. The wet season is shorter and the dry season is longer. Deciduous forests and tree-shredded grasslands are commonly associated with this climate.
7. Group B — Dry Climates
Dry climates are characterised by very low rainfall which is not adequate for the growth of plants. They occupy extensive areas between approximately 15° and 60° north and south of the equator.
They are divided into: Steppe / Semi-arid (BS) and Desert (BW).
At lower latitudes the major types are BSh and BWh, while in the mid-latitudes the important types are BSk and BWk.
8. Group C — Warm Temperate / Mid-latitude Climates
These climates generally have warm summers and mild winters. Important types include humid subtropical, Mediterranean and marine west coast climates.
Humid Subtropical — Cwa / Cfa
These climates are found mainly in subtropical regions. The Cwa type has a dry winter, while Cfa has no dry season.
Mediterranean — Cs
The Mediterranean climate is characterised by a hot, dry summer and mild, rainy winter. It occurs around the Mediterranean Sea and in similar west-coast regions of subtropical latitudes.
Marine West Coast — Cfb
It occurs on the western margins of continents in the mid-latitudes. Marine influence keeps temperatures moderate and precipitation occurs throughout the year.
9. Group D — Cold Snow Forest Climates
These climates occur mainly over large continental areas of the Northern Hemisphere between approximately 40° and 70° north.
Df — Cold Climate with Humid Winters
Winters are cold and snowy. The frost-free season is short and annual temperature ranges are large.
Dw — Cold Climate with Dry Winters
It occurs mainly over northeastern Asia. Winters are extremely cold, while precipitation occurs mainly during summer.
10. Group E — Polar Climates
ET — Tundra Climate
Tundra regions have permafrost and a very short growing season. Low-growing mosses, lichens and flowering plants are characteristic.
EF — Ice Cap Climate
Ice-cap climate occurs over the interior of Greenland and Antarctica. Even during summer, temperatures remain below the freezing point. Snow and ice accumulate and may move as icebergs.
11. Highland Climates
Highland climates are mainly controlled by topography and altitude.
In high mountains, large changes in mean temperature may occur over short distances. Precipitation type and intensity also vary spatially. Therefore, a vertical zonation of climatic types develops with increasing elevation.
Whenever you see a mountain climate question, immediately think: Altitude → Temperature Change → Precipitation Change → Vertical Zonation
12. Climate Change
Climate has never remained completely constant. Geological records show repeated changes between glacial and inter-glacial periods. Glacial landforms, sediment deposits, tree rings and historical records provide evidence of climatic variations.
The NCERT chapter also discusses climatic variability in the recent past. Examples include severe drought in the Sahel region during 1967–1977, the Dust Bowl drought in the southwestern Great Plains of the USA during the 1930s and Europe's Little Ice Age from about 1550 to 1850.
Climate change is not simply a phenomenon of the present. Earth's climate has changed naturally throughout geological history. The important issue today is the increasing influence of human activities on the climate system.
13. Causes of Climate Change
The causes of climate change can broadly be grouped into astronomical and terrestrial causes.
☀ Astronomical Causes
- Changes in solar output associated with sunspot activity.
- Milankovitch oscillations, involving variations in Earth's orbital characteristics, wobbling and axial tilt.
🌋 Terrestrial Causes
- Volcanic eruptions and the aerosols released into the atmosphere.
- Increasing concentration of greenhouse gases due to human activities.
14. Greenhouse Gases and Global Warming
Greenhouse gases absorb and influence terrestrial radiation and play an important role in the atmospheric heat balance. An increasing concentration of greenhouse gases is considered an important anthropogenic influence on climate.
The chapter particularly discusses carbon dioxide (CO₂) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
Carbon Dioxide — CO₂
The largest concentration among the greenhouse gases discussed in the chapter is carbon dioxide. Its major emissions are associated with the combustion of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Forests and oceans act as important sinks for carbon dioxide. Deforestation can increase atmospheric CO₂.
CFCs and Ozone
Chlorofluorocarbons are human-made substances. CFCs reaching the stratosphere can destroy ozone. Large depletion of ozone occurs over Antarctica, producing what is commonly called the ozone hole.
15. International Efforts — Kyoto Protocol
International efforts have been initiated to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. The chapter highlights the Kyoto Protocol, proclaimed in 1997 and brought into effect in 2005.
The chapter's Project Work asks students to collect information about the Kyoto declaration related to global climate change.
16. Global Warming and its Possible Effects
The increasing concentration of greenhouse gases may, in the long run, warm the Earth. Once global warming becomes established, reversing its effects may be difficult.
The effects may not be uniform everywhere. Possible consequences include changes in life-supporting systems and sea-level rise due to melting of glaciers and ice caps and thermal expansion of seawater.
Large parts of coastal areas and islands may therefore face serious risks, creating environmental as well as social problems.

3. प्रमुख जलवायु समूह — A, B, C, D और E

Cfb
Highland Climate
