1. Landforms: Meaning and Types /

English

A landform is a physical feature on the surface of Earth. Landforms take shape over millions of years and are closely connected with the environment and life.

The chapter broadly divides landforms into three categories: mountains, plateaus and plains. Each has different physical characteristics, climates, flora and fauna.

2. Mountains /

English

Mountains are landforms that are much higher than the surrounding landscape. They generally have a broad base, steep slopes and a narrow summit. At high altitudes, some mountains remain snow-covered.

Lower highlands with less height, gentler slopes and rounded tops are called hills. Mountains commonly occur in long groups called mountain ranges.

Examples include the Himalayas, Alps and Andes. Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga are among the highest peaks of the Himalayas; Aconcagua is the highest peak of the Andes, while Kilimanjaro is an isolated mountain in eastern Africa.

Water from the atmosphere reaching the ground as rain, snow or hail is called precipitation. Snow and hail are solid forms of precipitation.

3. Life in the Mountains /

English

Mountain environments vary with altitude. The air becomes thinner and temperatures generally decrease with increasing height. Mountain vegetation changes in stages, from forests at lower levels to shrubs and grasslands and finally sparse vegetation at very high altitudes.

Many rivers are fed by melting snow and glaciers. Mountains are also home to specialised animals such as yak, ibex, Himalayan tahr, mountain hare, golden eagle and other species.

People use terrace farming to cultivate sloping land. Herding, tourism, mountaineering and pilgrimage are also important activities in many mountain regions.

Mountain challenges / पर्वतीय चुनौतियाँ: Landslides, avalanches, flash floods, cloudbursts, heavy snowfall, extreme cold and uncontrolled tourism can create difficulties for people and put pressure on fragile mountain environments.

4. Plateaus / पठार

English

A plateau is a raised area of land with a relatively flat or gently rolling top. Plateaus usually rise sharply on at least one side. They may be formed by geological processes such as volcanic activity or uplift.

Important examples include the Tibetan Plateau, Deccan Plateau, Chhota Nagpur Plateau and East African Plateau.

5. Life in the Plateaus /

English

Plateaus are often rich in mineral resources. The African Plateau is famous for gold and diamond mining, while the Chhota Nagpur Plateau contains important reserves of iron, coal and manganese.

Many plateaus have rocky soil and are less fertile than plains. However, lava plateaus can have rich black soil and may be suitable for farming.

Plateaus also contain spectacular waterfalls, such as Victoria Falls, Hundru Falls, Jog Falls and Nohkalikai Falls.

6. Plains /

English

Plains have an extensive flat or gently undulating surface. They generally do not have large hills or deep valleys and are usually not more than about 300 metres above sea level.

Floodplains are formed when rivers carry rock particles, sand and silt called sediments from mountains and deposit them on plains. This process can make the soil very fertile.

7. Life in the Plains /

English

Fertile river plains have supported human settlements for thousands of years. Some of the world's earliest civilisations developed around rivers and fertile plains.

In India, the Ganga plain is one of the most densely populated regions. Around 40 crore people—more than one-fourth of India's population according to the chapter—live in the Ganga plain.

Plains support farming, settlements, transport and trade. Rivers such as the Ganga and its tributaries have also served as important waterways.

⭐ Why are plains densely populated? Fertile soil, relatively level land, availability of water, farming opportunities and easier transport and settlement make many plains favourable for human habitation.

8. Deserts /

English

A desert is a large, dry area receiving very little precipitation. Deserts have distinctive flora and fauna adapted to dry conditions.

Not all deserts are hot. The Sahara and Thar are examples of hot deserts, while the Gobi is a cold desert. Antarctica is also described by some experts as a desert because of its extremely low precipitation.

People have adapted to desert environments. Communities living in or moving through the Thar Desert have developed rich traditions, including folk songs and legends.

9. Landforms and Indian Culture /

English

Landforms are not only physical features; they are also closely linked with human culture. Mountains, rivers, forests, plains and deserts appear in stories, literature, religious traditions, art and everyday life.

India has a particularly rich tradition of celebrating the natural environment. Pilgrimage sites, festivals, occupations and local traditions often develop in relation to the surrounding landscape.

10. The Five Tiṇais /

Ancient Tamil Sangam poetry described five landscapes called tiṇais. They show a close relationship between landscape, lifestyle and human activity.

Kuriñji Mountainous regions / पर्वतीय क्षेत्र Hunting and gathering / शिकार और संग्रह
Mullai Grasslands and forests / घासभूमि और वन Cattle rearing / पशुपालन
Pālai Arid, desert-like regions / शुष्क, मरुस्थल जैसे क्षेत्र Journeying and fighting / यात्रा और युद्ध
The five tiṇais are a different cultural classification of landscapes. Their importance lies in showing how closely human life and the natural environment are connected.
