1. What Is a Civilisation? /
A civilisation is an advanced stage of human society. In this chapter, a civilisation is identified through several interconnected features:
- Government and administration
- Urbanism and planned settlements
- Water management and drainage
- A variety of specialised crafts
- Internal and external trade
- Some form of writing
- Cultural ideas expressed through art, architecture, literature, oral traditions or customs
- Productive agriculture capable of feeding villages and cities
2. Beginning of the Indus-Sarasvatī Civilisation /
Civilisation began at different times in different parts of the world. The chapter focuses on the north-western part of the Indian Subcontinent. The mature Indus-Sarasvatī civilisation is shown on the textbook timeline from about 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE.
Earlier farming and village communities provided an important foundation for the development of larger and more complex settlements.
3. Why Does It Have Several Names? /
The civilisation has been called by different names because archaeological discoveries were first associated with different places and river systems. Harappan comes from Harappa, one of the first excavated cities. The terms Indus and Indus-Sarasvatī reflect the wider geographical spread of the civilisation.
4. Cities & Town Planning /
Harappan cities were carefully planned. Many had broad streets arranged according to cardinal directions. Large settlements were often fortified and had distinct areas, including an upper town and a lower town.
Houses of different sizes lined streets and lanes. The chapter notes that the quality of construction was broadly similar in large and small houses. Bricks were widely used in construction.
Important Cities /
|---|---|---|
| Harappa | Punjab region, Pakistan | One of the first excavated major cities; gave the civilisation its common name. |
| Mohenjo-daro | Sindh, Pakistan | Known for the Great Bath and extensive urban remains. |
| Dholavira | Gujarat, India | Distinct city layout and sophisticated water reservoirs. |
| Lothal | Gujarat, India | Important settlement with a large dockyard and drainage features. |
| Kalibangan | Rajasthan, India | Planned streets and important archaeological remains. |
| Rakhigarhi | Haryana, India | One of the major Harappan settlements in the Sarasvatī basin. |
5. Water Management /
Water management was one of the outstanding achievements of the Harappans. Houses could have bathing areas connected to drains, and drainage systems often ran below streets to carry wastewater away.
Mohenjo-daro had hundreds of brick-lined wells. Dholavira is especially remarkable for its reservoirs and systems for collecting and storing water.
Great Bath of Mohenjo-daro /
The Great Bath was a carefully constructed tank measuring about 12 × 7 metres. Its bricks were waterproofed using materials such as natural bitumen. Archaeologists have proposed different interpretations of its purpose, including a special or ritual bathing facility. Since there is no inscription, text or traveller's account explaining its use, its exact purpose remains debated.
6. Agriculture, Food & Animals /
Productive agriculture supported Harappan towns and cities. Numerous rural settlements supplied agricultural produce to urban centres. Crops included cereals and other plants suited to different regions.
Harappans also domesticated animals and used river and sea resources. Archaeological discoveries of animal and fish bones provide evidence for meat consumption and fishing.
Scientific examination of pottery has revealed traces of foods such as dairy products, turmeric, ginger and banana, suggesting a diverse diet.
7. Crafts & Trade /
Harappan society had specialised craftspeople who worked with stone, metals, shells, clay and other raw materials. Bead-making was an important craft. Carnelian beads were especially valued, and craftspeople developed techniques to drill and decorate them.
Trade occurred within the civilisation and with distant regions. Harappans exported ornaments, timber and other goods, and probably cotton and gold. Copper was likely among the imported materials because it was less common in their home region.
Seals /
Harappan seals were generally made of steatite, a soft stone that could be hardened by heating. They are small and often show animal figures with writing signs above them. The writing system has not yet been fully understood, but the seals appear to have been connected with trade and identification.
8. Technology & Writing /
- Standardised bricks: widely used in construction.
- Drainage: carefully planned systems for wastewater.
- Water reservoirs: especially impressive at Dholavira.
- Metalworking: knowledge of metals and their processing.
- Bead-making: advanced drilling and decorative techniques.
- Shell working: production of shell ornaments such as bangles.
- Dockyard: Lothal has a major structure interpreted as a dockyard.
- Writing: seals contain signs belonging to a writing system that remains undeciphered.
9. Society & Civic Sense /
The archaeological evidence suggests organised community life. Similar construction quality in houses, carefully planned streets, drainage, wells and reservoirs point towards shared systems and responsibilities.
The chapter also highlights the idea of a relatively peaceful society. There is no clear archaeological evidence of large-scale warfare or a standing army in the mature Harappan cities.
10. Decline & Transformation /
The urban phase of the Harappan civilisation eventually declined. The textbook does not present a single simple cause. Two important factors discussed are:
- Climate change from around 2200 BCE: reduced rainfall and a drier phase could have made agriculture more difficult and reduced food supplies to cities.
- Changes in the Sarasvatī river system: parts of the river system dried up, and settlements such as Kalibangan and Banawali were abandoned.
The cities disappeared, but Harappan culture and technologies did not simply vanish. Many traditions continued into later phases of Indian civilisation.
