It is situated in southwestern Iran and, within the country's administrative framework, forms part of the Bushehr province.

Iran's largest offshore oil complex—the Abuzar Oil Refinery—is also situated near Kharg Island, located approximately 75 kilometers to its west. This region serves as the source for the majority of Iran's oil production in the Persian Gulf. Furthermore, pipelines connected to this island extend across the seabed to link with several of Iran's largest oil and gas fields.
