एक राजा थे। एक दिन वे जब वन-विहार को निकले। उन्हें रास्ते में प्यास लगी। उन्होंने आस - पास में नजर दौड़ाई तो एक अन्धे व्यक्ति की झोपड़ी दिखाई दी। राजा को जल से भरा घड़ा दूर से ही दिखाई दे रहा था। राजा ने अपने एक सिपाही को झोपड़ी की ओर भेजा और एक लोटा जल माँग कर लाने के लिए कहा। सिपाही वहाँ पहुँचा और बोला - ऐ अन्धे, एक लोटा पानी दे दे।  अन्धा अकड़ू था। उसने तुरन्त कहा - चल-चल तेरे जैसे सिपाहियों से मैं नहीं डरता। पानी तुझे नहीं दूँगा। सिपाही निराश लौट पड़ा।  इसके बाद राजा ने सेनापति को पानी लाने के लिए भेजा। सेनापति ने समीप जाकर कहा, अन्धे! पैसा मिलेगा, पानी दे। अन्धा फिर अकड़ पड़ा। उसने कहा, तुम पहले वाले व्यक्ति के सरदार मालूम पड़ते हो। फिर भी चुपड़ी बातें बना कर दबाव डाल रहे हो, जा-जा यहाँ से पानी नहीं मिलेगा।  सेनापति को भी खाली हाथ लौटता देखकर राजा स्वयं झोपड़ी की ओर चल पड़े। समीप पहुँचकर वृद्ध जन को सर्वप्रथम नमस्कार किया और कहा - ‘प्यास से गला सूख रहा है। एक लोटा जल दे सकें तो बड़ी कृपा होगी।’ अंधे ने सत्कारपूर्वक उन्हें पास बिठाया और कहा- ‘आप जैसे श्रेष्ठ जनों का राजा जैसा आदर है।
