मानव भूगोल, भौतिक पर्यावरण और मानव – जनित सामाजिक – सांस्कृतिक पर्यावरण के अंत: सम्बन्धों का अध्ययन, उनकी पारस्परिक अन्योन्यक्रिया (Interaction) के द्वारा करता है। भौगोलिक परिस्थितियों के अंतर्गत, मानव के उद्गम या क्रियाकलापों द्वारा निर्मित सांस्कृतिक दृश्यभूमि (Cultural Landscape) का अध्ययन ही मानव भूगोल की विषय वस्तु या विषय क्षेत्र है।
Human geography studies the inter-relationship between the physical environment and the human-generated socio-cultural environment through their mutual interaction. The subject matter or subject area of human geography is the study of the cultural landscape created by human origins or activities, under geographical conditions.

मानव भूगोल का विषय क्षेत्र अत्यंत विस्तृत है। इसमें वे सभी पदार्थ, कार्य तथा विचार शामिल किये जाते हैं, जो प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से मनुष्य व उसके पर्यावरण से जुड़े हुए होते हैं। जैसे – कृषि, उद्योग, व्यापार, संचार, जनसंख्या व इसका संघटन, मानव अधिवास, भाषा, साहित्य तथा राजनीतिक एवं प्रशासनिक इकाइयाँ आदि।
The subject area of human geography is very wide. In this, all those substances, actions and thoughts are included, which are directly or indirectly related to man and his environment. Such as agriculture, industry, trade, communication, population and its composition, human habitation, language, literature and political and administrative units etc.
