Barren Island: भारत का एकमात्र सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी
अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीप समूह के बैरन द्वीप, भारत का एकमात्र सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी है। इस पर 13 और 20 सितंबर 2025 को दो मामूली ज्वालामुखी विस्फोट हुए। हालांकि ये विस्फोट मामूली थे। इनसे ज्यादा नुकसान नहीं हुआ।

यह सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी अंडमान एवं निकोबार द्वीप समूह की राजधानी श्री विजयपुरम (पूर्व नाम पोर्ट ब्लेयर) से लगभग 140 किलोमीटर दूर पूर्व में स्थित है।
अंडमान और निकोबार प्रशासन के अनुसार, बैरन द्वीप पर पहला विस्फोट 1787 में हुआ था। इसके बाद 1991, 2005, 2017 और 2022 में भी छोटे विस्फोट हुए हैं। यह 150 साल शांत रहने के बाद वर्ष 1991 में सक्रिय हुआ था।
यह दक्षिण एशिया का एकमात्र सक्रिय ज्वालामुखी होने के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, जिसका अंतिम विस्फोट 2017 में हुआ था। यह द्वीप लगभग 3 वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैला है और मुख्यतः ज्वालामुखी शंकुओं और राख से ढका हुआ है, जहाँ दूर से बहुत कम वनस्पति दिखाई देती है। क्रिस्टल-साफ़ पानी और प्रवाल भित्तियों से घिरा यह ऊबड़-खाबड़ इलाका, भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप के किसी भी अन्य स्थान से अलग, एक अत्यंत आकर्षक परिदृश्य का निर्माण करता है।

Barren Island: India's Only Active Volcano
Barren Island, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is India's only active volcano. Two minor volcanic eruptions occurred on September 13 and 20, 2025. However, these eruptions were minor and did not cause significant damage.
This active volcano is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Sri Vijaya Puram (Old Name Port Blair), the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, the first eruption on Barren Island occurred in 1787. Subsequent minor eruptions have occurred in 1991, 2005, 2017, and 2022. It became active in 1991 after remaining dormant for 150 years.
It is renowned for being South Asia's only active volcano, which last erupted in 2017. The island spans about 3 square kilometres and is predominantly covered by volcanic cones and ash, with little vegetation visible from afar. The rugged terrain, surrounded by crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, creates a stark yet fascinating landscape unlike any other in the Indian subcontinent.
