प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंद्र मोदी जी के देश को औपनिवेशिक प्रभाव से मुक्त करने के दृष्टिकोण से प्रेरित होकर, आज (13 SEP 2024) हमने पोर्ट ब्लेयर का नाम बदलकर "श्री विजयपुरम" करने का निर्णय लिया है।
हालांकि पहले वाला नाम औपनिवेशिक विरासत का था, श्री विजयपुरम हमारे स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में प्राप्त विजय और उसमें अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह की अद्वितीय भूमिका का प्रतीक है।

यह द्वीपीय क्षेत्र, जो कभी चोल साम्राज्य का नौसैनिक अड्डा हुआ करता था, आज हमारी रणनीतिक और विकासात्मक आकांक्षाओं का महत्वपूर्ण आधार बनने के लिए तैयार है।

श्री अमित शाह ने कहा कि यह वह स्थान भी है जहाँ नेताजी सुभाष चंद्र बोस जी ने पहली बार तिरंगा फहराया था और यहीं वह सेलुलर जेल भी है जहाँ वीर सावरकर जी और अन्य स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों ने स्वतंत्र राष्ट्र के लिए संघर्ष किया था।

पोर्ट ब्लेयर:
केंद्र शासित प्रदेश अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप समूह की राजधानी।
इसका नाम बॉम्बे मरीन के एक नौसेना सर्वेक्षक आर्चीबाल्ड ब्लेयर के नाम पर रखा गया है।
ब्लेयर ने 1778-1779 में अंडमान द्वीप समूह का पहला गहन सर्वेक्षण किया था।
यह द्वीप अब भारतीय सशस्त्र बलों की पहली एकीकृत त्रि-कमान का घर है।
ऐतिहासिक महत्व:
11वीं शताब्दी के चोल सम्राट राजेंद्र प्रथम द्वारा एक रणनीतिक नौसैनिक अड्डे के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया गया था।
चोलों ने इस द्वीप को मा-नक्कावरम कहा, जिससे इसका आधुनिक नाम निकोबार पड़ा।
औपनिवेशिक काल के दौरान, ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी (ईआईसी) ने मलय समुद्री डाकुओं का मुकाबला करने के लिए द्वीपों को उपनिवेश बनाने का निर्णय लिया।
यह एक दंडात्मक उपनिवेश बन गया जहाँ दोषियों को बिना वेतन के काम करने के लिए द्वीपों पर भेजा जाता था।
लेकिन 1796 में वहाँ गंभीर बीमारी और मृत्यु के कारण इसे छोड़ दिया गया।
1857 के विद्रोह के बाद, पोर्ट ब्लेयर को एक दंडात्मक उपनिवेश के रूप में पुनर्स्थापित किया गया।
काला पानी के नाम से प्रसिद्ध सेलुलर जेल में वी.डी. सावरकर जैसे नेता रहे।
नेताजी सुभाष चंद्र बोस द्वारा भारतीय ध्वज फहराए जाने का आयोजन यहीं हुआ था।

The Government has decided to rename the capital of Andaman & Nicobar Islands Port Blair as "Sri Vijaya Puram”. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah made announced this historical decision. In a post on ‘X’, Home Minister said, inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, to free the nation from the colonial imprints, today we have decided to rename Port Blair as "Sri Vijaya Puram."
Union Home Minister said that while the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolises the victory achieved in our freedom struggle and the A&N Islands' unique role in the same. He added that Andaman & Nicobar Islands have an unparalleled place in our freedom struggle and history. The island territory that once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire is today poised to be the critical base for our strategic and development aspirations.
Shri Amit Shah said that it is also the place that hosted the first unfurling of our Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji and also the cellular jail in which Veer Savarkar Ji and other freedom fighters struggled for an independent nation.

Port Blair:

Named after Archibald Blair, a naval surveyor in the Bombay Marine.
Blair conducted the 1st thorough survey of the Andaman Islands in 1778-1779.
The island is now home to India’s first integrated tri-command of the Indian Armed Forces.
Historical significance:
Used as a strategic naval base by 11th century Chola emperor Rajendra I.
Cholas referred to the island as Ma-Nakkavaram, leading to the modern name Nicobar.
During colonial times, East India Company (EIC) decided to colonize the islands to counter Malay pirates
Became a penal colony with convicts being transported to the islands to serve unpaid labour
But abandoned in 1796 on account of severe disease and death there.
Post-1857 revolt, Port Blair was resettled as a penal colony.
Cellular Jail, known as Kaala Paani, housed leaders like VD Savarkar.
Hosted the unfurling of the Indian flag by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
