तूफ़ानों के नाम कैसे रखे जाते हैं? चक्रवातीय तूफ़ानों को नाम क्यों दिए जाते हैं ? तूफान को नाम इसलिए दिया जाता है, ताकि आम लोगों और वैज्ञानिकों में इसे लेकर असमंजस न बना रहे। दुनिया भर में तूफानों के नाम 5 कमेटियां फाइनल करती हैं। इन कमेटियों के नाम हैं:  (1) इस्‍केप टाइफून कमेटी  (2) इस्‍केप पैनल ऑफ ट्रॉपिकल साइक्‍लोन  (3) आरए 1 ट्रॉपिकल साइक्‍लोन कमेटी  (4) आरए- 4  (5) आरए- 5 ट्रॉपिकल साइक्‍लोन कमेटी।  सबसे पहले विश्‍व मौसम विज्ञान संगठन (WMO) ने चक्रवातों के नाम रखने की शुरुआत की गई थी।  भारत में तूफानों का नाम रखने का चलन 2004 से शुरू हुआ।  भारत के साथ-साथ पाकिस्तान, बांग्लादेश, श्रीलंका, मालदीव, म्यांमार, ओमान और थाइलैंड में भी तूफानों का नाम रखने का फॉर्मूला अपनाया जाता है।   इन 8 देशों की ओर से सुझाए गए नामों के पहले अक्षर के अनुसार उनका क्रम तय किया जाता है और उसी क्रम के अनुसार चक्रवातों के नाम रखे जाते हैं। इन सभी आठ देशों ने वर्ल्ड मेट्रोलॉजिकल ऑर्गनाइजेशन (World Meteorological Organization) को तूफानों के नाम की लिस्ट दी हुई है...

How are cyclones named? The World Meterological Organisation (WMO) and member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP) are responsible for naming each tropical cyclone. Tropical Cyclone Naming WMO maintains rotating lists of names which are appropriate for each Tropical Cyclone basin. If a cyclone is particularly deadly or costly, then its name is retired and replaced by another one.   Tropical cyclones can last for a week or more; therefore there can be more than one cyclone at a time. Weather forecasters give each tropical cyclone a name to avoid confusion. In general, tropical cyclones are named according to the rules at regional level. In the Atlantic and in the Southern hemisphere (Indian ocean and South Pacific), tropical cyclones receive names in alphabetical order, and women and men's names are alternated.
