1. Choose the right answers of the followings from the given options.
(i) India’s population as per 2011 census is :
(a) 1028 million 
(b) 3182 million 
(c) 3287 million
(d) 1210 million
Answer - (d) 1210 million
Note - According to census report 2011, the population of India is 1210 million which includes 623 million males and 586 million females.

(ii) Which one of the following states has the highest density of population in India?
(a) West Bengal 
(b) Kerala 
(c) Uttar Pradesh
(d) Punjab
Answer - (a) West Bengal
Note - As per Census 2011 data, the most populous state is West Bengal having population density 1029.

(iii) Which one of the following states has the highest proportion of urban population in India according to 2011 Census?
(a) Tamil Nadu 
(b) Maharashtra 
(c) Kerala
(d) Goa
Answer - (b) Maharashtra
Note - According to census 2011 data, Maharashtra has the highest population of urban population of India which corresponds to 50.8 million accounts for 13.8% share to total urban population in the country.

(iv) Which one of the following is the largest linguistic group of India?
(a) Sino – Tibetan 
(b) Indo – Aryan 
(c) Austric
(d) Dravidian
Answer - (b) Indo – Aryan 
Note - According to the Linguistic Survey of India, the Indo-European (Aryan) group is the largest linguistic group of India which accounts 73% of the total.

2. Answer the following questions in about 30 words.
(i) Very hot and dry and very cold and wet regions of India have low density of population. In this light, explain the role of climate on the distribution of population.
Answer - 
Climate plays a big role in the distribution of population. The places where the climate is harsh i.e. very hot, dry especially in deserts and very cold especially in Jammu and Kashmir, and wet regions like Cherrapunji in Assam have very low-density population. People like to live in moderate type of climate like in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and these regions have very high density of population.

(ii) Which states have large rural population in India? Give one reason for such large rural population.
Answer - 
The states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal have large rural population in India. Together they contribute about 37.2% of the total rural population in India.
In these rural areas, agriculture is the main occupation which accounts for 60% of the total occupation in India and the climate suits for living.

(iii) Why do some states of India have higher rates of work participation than others?
Answer - 
In urbanized areas like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra there are various types of jobs present. So, people are engaged in various kinds of jobs which increase the overall rate of work participation in that state. But states like Bihar, West Bengal have limited job opportunities and the main occupation is agriculture is declining. As a result, the work participation rate is low.

(iv) ‘The agricultural sector has the largest share of Indian workers.’ – Explain.
Answer - India is an agriculture-based country. It is an important sector in the Indian economy as it accounts for 17% in the total GDP and provides employment about 60% of the population in the country. Over the years there has been green revolution and modernizations in farming, as a result lot of people are indulging in this occupation.

3. Answer the following questions in about 150 words.
(i) Discuss the spatial pattern of density of population in India.
Answer - The spatial pattern of density of population in India is as follows:-
• The population density ranges as low as 17 in Arunachal Pradesh to 11,297 in Delhi.
• The North Indian states like Bihar (1102), West Bengal (1029), Uttar Pradesh (828) have very high density of population because of various factors.
• The Peninsular India states like that of Kerala (859) and Tamil Nadu (555) have very high density of population.
• States like Assam, Odisha, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana have moderate density of population.
• The hill states lying in the Himalayan range and Northeastern states of India like Mizoram, Tripura have low density of population.
• The Union territories (excluding Andaman and Nicobar Islands) have very high density of population.

(ii) Give an account of the occupational structure of India’s population.
Answer - The occupational structure of India’s population is as follows: -
• India is an agriculture-based country. It provides employment to 60% people in the country. Other major occupations include manufacturing, trade, services; show a large proportion of primary sector over secondary and tertiary sectors.
• Around 54.6% of the total population are cultivators and agricultural laborer's 3.8% of workers indulge in household activities, 41.6% workers are engaged in various occupations like manufacturing, trade, commerce, construction, etc.
• It is seen that the males outnumber females in work areas.
• Recently, there is an increase in the number of females in the primary sector.
• Occupation of agriculture is currently declining, and many people are getting engaged in secondary and tertiary sectors.
